BROOKINGS-HARBOR PILOT. BROOKINGS, OREGON
Task Force Moors to Polar Ice
Ey Harris Ellsworth, M. C
Everything is very ouiet on th?
house side of the Capitol now.
Practically all of the representa
tives have left Washington. The
house recess ends officially Sept.
21, but since that is the middle
of the week nothing except rou
tine business will be transacted
until Monday, the 26th.
In a few days I will leave for
Europe with members of the ccm-
tain men holding high positions
of public trust. Hunt has been
smeared somewhat. I don’t think
much of his “profession” and it

Two ships of a Naval expedition to the Antarctic, the USS Edisto and
the USS Burton Island, tie up to bay ice in the course of exploration
work in the South Polar regions. The above photo was taken in the
Bay of Whales. Sled and skis used in surface exploration are in the
left foreground. The Navy's role in carrying the flag of the United
States to the ends of the earth is exemplified in its frequent sallies into
the south and north polar fastnesses.

commerce. Public health legisla
tion is assigned to that commit
tee. Hearings have already been
held by the committee on the
Truman socialized medicine bills.
We discovered, how’ever, that 1st
hand information regarding the
operation of socialized medicine
in England would be vital to a
really careful consideration of
such legislation.
It is my intention to do con
siderable of what might be called
private investigating when I am
in England with the committee.
I know the group wall be given
plenty of official information and
that a competent report will be
written on the facts and figures
obtained by the committee. What
I want most to know, however,
can best be obtained by talking
with people — doctors, w’orking
people, officials, and everyone w ho
will spare the time for conversa
tion. I also want to dig rather
deeply into the question of fi
nance. This subject is so ex
tremely important that I feel a
great need for every scrap of
reliable information I can get.
The committee will come home
by air and will arrive back in
Washington the morning of the
26th of the month.

The senate committee investi
gation into the activities of the
so-called “5 per centers” has this
capitol city agog these days. It
is a sordid revelation of th? sort
of thing that can and does go»
on when appointments to high!
places in this the greatest gov-i
eminent in the world are made
almost solely upon the basis of
friendship and politics.
I think in fairness, and just to
keep the record straight about
this “5 per center” mess, I should
point out that the center of the
disturbance, a former army offi-j
cer by the name of James Hunt,!
apparently did nothing either dis
honest or illegal. All I know’ about
it is what I read in the newspa
pers—and the Washington, D. C.,
papers are full of it—but it is
pretty clear to me that Hunt has
been doing nothing more or less
than ordinary attorneys and lob
byists here do, and have been do
ing for many years. They rep
resent clients who want to do
business with the government on
the most favorable basis possible.
Hunt knows his way around
Washington and in government
circles and charged his clients a
fee for using that knowledge for
them. He seemed to be able to
deliver fairly well because of the
cupidity and low calibre of cer-
may be just as well not to turn
the heat on such people. How
ever, let’s not forget that the
real guilt lies with those people
Hunt was able to “influence.”
It seems likely now that this
session of congress will adjourn
for the remainder of the year|
along about the 15th of October.
I plan to get home just as soon
as I can after the business of the
session is completed. 1 still expect
to be able to visit all seven of
the Fourth Congressional district
counties before the end of the!
year. Meanwhile this is the last
“letter from Washington” for
several weeks and possibly for
this year.

“Substances” is the subject of
the Lesson-Sermon in all Church
es of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday,
September 11.
The golden text is “Eye hath
not seen, nor ear heard, neither
have entered into the heart of
man, the things which God hath
prepared for them that love him.
Put God hath revealed them unto
us by his Spirit” (1 Cor. 2:9,10).
Among citations which com
prise the Lesson-Sermon is the
following from the Bible: “Ev
ery good gift and every perfect
gift is from above, and cometh
down from the Father of lights,
with whom is no variableness,
neither shadow of turning” (Jas.
1:17), together with the follow
ing correlative passage from the
Christian Science textbook: “Sci
ence and Health with Key to the
Scriptures.” by Mary Baker Ed
dy: “Substance is that which is
eternal and incapable of discord
and decay” (page 468).
