as far as the remainder of the world is concerned, is being sought
by a committee (soon to be an association and probably incorpor
ated), which is willing to pay $25 for the winner. Have you given
youi imagination a chance to work, and have mailed in one?
This name should catch the fancy of everyone, it should be one
which will identify the vicinity for what it really is. It should be
catchy enough that mere mention would tell people what section
is alluded to. In speaking of Rosarians, one doesn’t think much to
know that Portland is being talked about. The same is true of
Salem and her Cherrians. Some name could be fitted here.
Once established and properly advertised, this name will do much
to exploit this section of Oregon. If people here have pride in*the
community, here is the best opportunity to obtain a unity never
before experienced. Your idea may be worth $25 if you try.
Taxation Forces Water Rate Raise
There has been some discussion concerning the proposed raise
In water rates, much of it without thinking. Facts behind this raise
in rates may be directly traceable to the state tax commission,
which has practiced near-usury in taxing the Brookings Water Co.
Taxa I ion in this method, figures show, is next to usury. No firm
whether private of corporately owned, can stand such expense and
stay in business. This is true, not only here, but all over the state
among privately-owned utilities. The water company, the Pilot be
lieves, is justified in its petition to raise rates.

Pilot, at least 50 times of the
flagrant violations made by a
number of drivers. Others, it is
pointed out, are careful and peo
ple are not alarmed by their
passing. This must go on, it seems
to me, until a death will be the
price to stop this practice.
White lines are put on
higa ways for a purpose. They a re

impaired vision ahead, and their
being placed in these spots is

of this warning was cause for
a wreck Sunday, which could've
had much more grave results.
Brookings Pelicans are a step
nearer the pennant in Rogue Val-
ley League, because they ha\e¡
always tried to give the fans a J
game they like to see with the
players doing their best at all
times. Much of this credit, aside
from the willingness and work
on the part of players, may be
traced to Business Manager Pete
Lesmeister and Manager "Babe”
Also noticeable is the spirit of
all the players, who hki the
