Camp Cleawox An
Ideal Training For
Girl Scouts, IC-16
People who never have had a
chance to see Girl Scouring in
action, especially as can be put
on at Camp Cleawox (near Flor-
tnce, Ore.), have missed a big
treat.
This treat is denied most peo-
pie, unless they have a daughtei
registered at camp- it’s that ex
clusive. Situated on a peninsula
jutting out into Lake Cleawox.
1he camp can be reached only by
barge, unless one would want to
take a long hike around the end
of the lake, perhaps a dozen or
more miles.
As a back-drop to this scene
from the highway-side of the lake
are the sand dunes of mountain
heights, and almost as white as
snow. The camp sits in a jungle
like forest, criss-crossed in web
like fashion by trails cut through
the undergrowth. It takes a girl
scout camper to find her way in
this maize of trails.
Divided into five sections, the
girls are classified according to
age groups. The beginners are
dubbed “Explorers” and the old
est group is called “Vikings.”
Each group has its little city
of shelters, crescent-shaped af
fairs with three walls, and hous
ing nine girls. In front of each
is an open hearth fireplace, and
in the middle of the group is an
arena for group activities.
The dining hall is a huge rus
tic structure which will accom
modate about 200 diners. The
kitchen looked efficient for the
feeding of those hungry mouths
made hungrier by living in the
out-doors, and whetted by much
< xercises of such as swimming.
