BROOKINGS-HARBOR PILOT, BROOKINGS. OREGON
THURSDAY. JULY 7, 1949
Brookings Won Pair
Of Games During
Holiday Week-end
Brookings Pelicans entertained
the Lily Blossom Time visitors,
Sunday and Monday, with two
v ins, first from Merlin, whom the
Pelicans had beaten twice before
this year, and Gold Beach, Mon
day afternoon. Strangely enough,
the scores were almost the same.
With Merlin short two players,
Mendenhall and Brunk played for
the visitors, Mendenhall behind
the plate and Brunk at second.
Brookings got under way in her
first inning by chasing over four
runs, annexed another in the sec
ond, and another in the fourth.
Loose support for Don Ackley
in the third let Merlin spike the
plate for three, and again in the
fourth.
The seventh inning was saved
for the fireworks. Merlin added
three more, but Brookings blasted
the works in her half for seven.

W i t h Whitey Matson batting

major leagues, Monday, Brook
ings Pelicans took their second
week-end game from Gold Beach
17 to 6. Matson, in six trips to
the plate, amassed six hits and
six runs, which were made up
ot two singles, two triples, a dou
ble and a home run.
Bob Aston, pitching for Gold
Beach, and picked as the out
standing prep baseball player in
1948, led Gold Beach hit parade,
with three hits in four trips, but
his effort availed little due to the
weak support given him.
Westbrook, on the other hand,
gave up but nine hits to Gold
Beach, but his wildness in the
third inning was almost his un
doing. He hit\ the first two bats
men to face him, walked the
third and hit the fourth. After
one of these was nipped trying
to steal, he permitted the first
score on a wild pitch. Two singles
by Ken Curry and Jerry Fendrick
gave the visitors four runs. Until
the eighth, Westbrook was almost
miserly with his base knocks at
times when they would have been
good for runs. His support was
sparkling at all times.
