What About Health Insurance Costs?
From Christian Science Monitor comes one of the best reasons
for defeat of any socialized medicine move, or even a health in
surance program that could be set up by the federal government:
It has become a habit for federal officials promoting compulsory
health insurance in the United States to minimize or ignore its
costs. 'Fhc original Wagner-Murray-Dingell bill played down the
costs. The last of the series under this name left them out alto
gether. Effort has been persistently made for the past ten years
to sell the American public something calling for a huge expense
without giving an accurate forecast of the ultimate cost. That may
be ingenious, but it is poor public policy.
I {owever,
now and then furnished by independent
sources. W. Rulon Williamson, former actuary of the Social Se-
curity Board, says there could be a high of 18% of payroll, a pluas-
ible medium of 12H%, and a low, hardly to be expected, of 7% when
years henct» 1 he program is fully under way. These benefits in
clude both medical and cash benefits for disability the standard
features of government health insurance.
Mr. Williamson points out that a great deal depends on the lib
erality both of the formula and of administrators, and hence es
timates must vary widely. But in his view the total cost of social
security, with health insurance added to the liberalized old-age
nnd survivors’ insurance and unemployment compensation, could
come between 18% and 36% of payroll.
The greatly mounting costs of the British and New Zealand
health insurance programs indicate that the United States would
be faced with the same problem. If introduced here and really
made effective, health insurance for many years would probably
require much more tax money than old-age or unemployment in
surance. Its financing should be adequately explored.
Let's Not Have A Cathy Fiscus Case
Hie American Legion and Auxiliary are backing a campaign
which they hope will make the Brookings-Harbor area so con
scious of the danger of open wells, empty shafts or unprotected
excavations, that it wiW be an impossibility for any of our small
children to meet the same pitiable and tragic end as little Cathy
Fiscus just a few short weeks ago.
Similiar and subsequent happenings have proved that there is
still much carelessness regarding such hazards. Let each one of
us be responsible that no such tragedy occurs on our own property.
Let each and everyone of us report any known hazard on aband
oned or unoccupied properties Let’s all remain alert constantly.
Such reports turned in to the Pilot will be given to the Amer
ican Legion which body will bend every effort to make such death
traps a thing of the past, in this area.
