He Did It For "Piece Of Silver
A man’s vanity, his desire to get his copy into print at so much
per column inch has caused Brookings Chamber of Commerce no
end of embarrassment the past two weeks.
The Pilot is not trying to down one person at the exhonoration
of another, but resulting from the desire to get stories in print
has caused two and possibly three resignations from the board of
directors of the chamber. These men will not even assume a de
fensive attitude will not come out with a statement.
It was a shock to many local people, those who are subscribers
to Oregon Journal, to read in that newspaper that the chamber
was opposing the harbor building at Gold Beach. So far as the
Pilot was able to learn, there never had been any discussion on
this subject, as a chamber, or by its board of directors.
The first inkling that something was amiss came with the letter
published last week in these columns, condemning this action. At
this beginning the Pilot did what investigating possible, and found
few knowing anything about any action, especially that supposed
to have been taken by the chamber.
Chamber action, like any other community effort, should come
from the majority. What has happened, it seems, cannot be traced
to even a minority if that is the word for it.

Despite tales to the contrary, there still is some compassion left
in the world. Proof of this statement may be attested by the fact
that half of San Marino turned out to rescue little Cathy Fiscus,
who died Friday in an abandoned well, despite all efforts to save.
Witness the nation-wide interest brought about through the radio,
television and the newspapers. Witness also the appearance, from
places unknown, tin* machinery employed in the frantic and fu
tile digging of another shaft. Rental of all the facilities at hand
might have cost several thousand dollars an hour. Men from all
walks of lilt* who worked almo t the enfin 48 hours.
Little Cathy was not reamed in time, but it was not meant to
be that way. Human endorance and ability were insufficient, but

“Doctrine of Atonement” is the 1
subject of the Lesson-Sermon in
all Churches of Christ, Scientist,
On Sunday, April 17.
The Golden Text is “John seeth
Jesus coming unto him, and saith.
Behold the Lamb of God, which
taketh away the sin of the world”
(John 1:29).
Among citations which com
prise the Lesson-Sermon is the
following from the Bible: “I
have set the Lord always before
me: because he is at my right
hand, I shall not be moved” (Ps.
16:8), together with the follow
ing correlative passage from the
Christian Science Textbook, “Sci
ence and Health with Key to the
Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy:
“We acknowledge that the cruci
fixion of Jesus and his resurrec
tion served to uplift faith to un
derstand eternal life, even the
allness of Soul. Spirit and the
nothingness of matter” (page 497)
