perature in Dallas, Texas, where
University of Oregon will meet
Southern Methodist in the Cotton
Bowl game. New’ Year’s day. He
said cold winds came in from the
north. This fact will be watched
with much interest by Oregonians
who fear a hot day for the team
in the bowl game.
Temperatures, funny as this
may sound to you, are records
that will fool you. For instance,
freezing at this elevation and lat
itude seems much colder than a
temperature of zero at Bend at
that elevation. The humidity of
the
air makes coastline cold a
J
lot more disagreeable. It also is
true about making heat more op

pressive.

L. H. Gregory, in his Sports
Gossip column, told of the tern-1..
As we approach the dawn of a new year—1949
—we have reason to believe that this vicinity holds
much in store for all of us. How much this will be
depends largely upon the effort the citizens of this
area are willing to work in a co-operative manner.
With prospects for a “high-line” and “sky hook”
to be used in loading out for shipment by water all
lumber products, is but a beginning of what can be
but a start of a city right on the spot we now give
little thought. One industry naturally will attract
another and complimentary industry.
Insured lumber industry here would naturally be
the attraction for re-manufacturing plants of one
kind or another. Water shipment assured, certainly!
the attraction will be much more attractive for cap-!
ital to invest in Curry county.
Announcement that the army engineers had given
their approval of the sky hook was taken by local
Brookings
lumbermen as the salvation of the industry against
any competition which may be entered into the pic
Trailer Camp
ture in the future. Resumption of work already is
being planned by mills which have been shut down

Another way in which people of the area mav be
of greater help is to join and support the Brookings
Chamber of Commerce, which body is ever alert to
possibilities which will add to the attractiveness of $5, wk.z $20, mo
this section. Plans of this body for 1949 are being
shaped with an idea for the future.
Fishing, and the future of this vicinity in that in
dustry, was given a boost by investigation of some
voc
people who quietly investigated the area, without any
r
remarks to anyone, and without revealing their per
sonal identity, late last week, leaving Christmas eve I
without, talking about any plans which they have.! BENEFIT BY THIS
These men, it was said, were from south California.
