State Official Says
December Hazards
Are The Greatest
SALEM “Don’t let death take
your holiday!”
This pre-Christmas warning
from Secretary of State Earl T.
Newbry is aimed at happier hoA-
day season for Oregonians, with
fewer traffic accidents and deaths
this year.
“Traffic deaths reach their peak
during December and the holi-
day season,” Newbry^pointed out.
“The month of December, 1946, |
when 56 persons were killed, was j
the worst single month we have
ever experienced, and last De
cember was not much better.”
Newbry said the major factors
in the holiday problem are heav-
ier vehicle and pedestrian traf-
fie, seasonal hazards and more
widespread drinking. By over
coming the first two with ea re-
ful driving, and avoiding the last
when planning to drive or walk
in traffic, Oregonians could re
duce holiday t radgedies by at
least two-thirds, he declared.
“It’s the season to be merry’
of course. But let’s make it
the season to be wary, as well,”
the safety official suggested.
