“Benny Goodman could accuse
the c la rin e tist of stealing his own
style, and the pianist had hair
like Paderew ski. The music was
in the best jazz fashion, and the
girls w ere good dancers. Our CO
even jitterb u g g ed a bit with the
best-looking girl. He’s the one

jeep and lived to tell the tale.
“If you can get one of the
com pany’s shotguns and am m uni
tion for it, the hunting is pretty
good. P h easan t and small red
deer abound in the hills, mainly
because the K oreans can't have
w eapons and the GIs don’t have
m uch tim e to hunt. One of the
officers is looking for shells for
my buddy and me. We’ll really
e a t w hen we get them.
“T he n a tu ra l scenery reminds
one of C alifrnia. There are hills
covered w i t h gnarled, stunted
pines th a t look like scrub oak
from a distance. The earth has
a reddish tint, rem iniscent of a
few p a rts of Oregon. It really
grow s rice and bamboo, if noth
ing else.
Most of the farm ers live in mud
h u ts thatched w ith rice straw’.
Som e of them are rich enough to
have clay tile roofs which turn
the w ater more effectively than
the straw’.
“There are a few modern build
ings and some really beautiful
temples, one of which is just
over the hill from our company
area. It has tw’o sections, one for
women only, and the other for
men. We had to bribe our way
in to the men’s part. An old crone
ran us off before w’e were within
50 yards of the women’s section,
but I got a glimpse of some of
the fine architecture inside the
high wall. M o s t Koreans are
Sham ans b y descent, although
there about 500,000 Christians
in the whole of Korea. They have
some beautiful churches, most of
them being in the capital city,
Seoul. .
“The w eather is inclement most
of the time, to say the least. Very
cold, and sometimes damp. We
finally got a stove for the shop.
I t’s a tossup between choking
acrid smoke, or treezing cold. I’d
almost take the cold.
