letters A GENTLEMAN AND A PRO Thank you for sharing the news of Sam Brown’s passing (EW 8/25). I heard his voice singing above the post offi ce traffi c before I ever met him. His lovely voice and his guitar playing eventually led me to asking him to play at a wed- ding celebration my fi ance and I hosted for friends and family. Sam humored me and delivered on my request for an acoustic version of Pete Townshend's “Let My Love Open the Door.” He was an unassuming gen- tleman and a seasoned professional. I hope he knew that he had fans in our community who appreciated his talents and his gentle soul. Rock on, Sam! You will be missed. Robyn Hathcock Eugene GOOD RIDDANCE, SYRETT I honestly don't know every single de- tail about Claire Syrett being recalled. I do, however, live in Ward 7. What I am pretty sure of is that the Lane Transit District’s MovingAhead project will do (as usual) more harm than good if it is fol- lowed through with. Eugene and LTD con- stantly deceive us regarding the eff ects of this or that plan, project, etc. How anyone over the age of 9 can trust city govern- ment anymore is a mystery to me. But the real laugh line, the bone- crushing irony, is her claiming in Slant (9/8), that “They used extreme rhetoric" to get her recalled. This coming from a woman who represents a political party to whom every disagreement must be racially motivated, every issue is a crisis and every crisis is a life or death, end-of- life-as-we-know-it catastrophe. And how the fu** is it a “Trumpian lie” to show concern, get people moti- vated, do some legwork and get a career politician recalled? The editor(s) that wrote the piece probably wanted the headline, “Trump and Russian disinfor- mation gets Syrett recalled.” Brian Palmer Eugene GIVE UNSAFE PASSING A PASS I was cycling westbound on West 3rd at Lincoln when some hot shot food de- livery guy (full disclosure: I used to do food delivery) gunned it and passed thru the car in front of him right next to the (thankfully well-attended) child care for the rock climbing gym. If I hadn’t been born on high alert something really bad might have happened. If we need to hold a bake sale to pay for a double solid yellow line for those two blocks to meet the crumbling dou- ble yellow east of Lincoln, I’ll take a doz- en of those brownies. Or maybe borrow one of those artists who are decorating the storm drains. I’ll even donate my labor. Pretty sure I can still paint a straight line. Leo Muzzy Eugene SITTING BY THE PHONE, WAITING FOR HELP Why are there no mental health ser- vices in Eugene? I am a recovering alco- holic with depression and Asperger’s syndrome, and I can’t fi nd a therapist in this town to save my life. I’m on a waiting list with Chrysalis Behavioral Health Outpatient Services, who have told me that the waiting list is a month long, and if I don’t answer the phone when they call me, they’ll just go to the next person on the list. Am I just supposed to sit by my phone for a month and hope I don’t miss the call? No, so I have been looking for some- one who can help me sooner on Pacifi c Source’s offi cial website hoping to get help sooner. However, even when I fi nd someone my insurance will pay for, they don’t pick up the phone. I sit there listen- ing to a robot talk for 10 minutes, only to be sent to an answering machine telling me to leave a voicemail and wait for a call back, or that they’re not accepting new patients and to leave a message if I want to join their waitlist. We have a mental health care crisis in this country and it feels like the people who are supposed to help us don’t care. Doctors are not heroes, they are not public servants, they are capitalist and all they care about is making money and if they can’t make money off you, they don’t care if you live or die.
