• Gun buyers short on cash are able to pay in installments
through third party fi nancing, just like buying a new pair of
sneakers, according to a May 27 article in Bloomberg written
by Max Reyes and former EW intern Michael Tobin. The report-
ers looked at fi rearms sold by Daniel Defense and same-day
purchase installment plans through Credova that help people
buy AR-15 style guns that start in price at around $2,000. With
no end in sight to our gun violence epidemic, the last thing we
need is making weapons easier to buy.
• It's time to pick our team for the NBA title playoff s.
Some of us are still with Steph Curry and the Golden State
Warriors, but some like the Boston Celtics partly because Payton
Pritchard, former Oregon Duck, is on their roster. This best-
of-seven series starts June 2, with the second game on Sunday,
June 5. It's nice to sink into watching great basketball when the
other news is so depressing.
• What we're reading:
Chasing History: A Kid in the
Newsroom by Carl Bernstein,
published in 2022 by Henry
Holt and Co. Any reader inter-
ested in journalism and govern-
ment will fi nd this well-written
book fascinating, beginning
with Bernstein's fi rst job as
a copyboy for the Washing-
ton Evening Star. Historian
Doris Kearns Goodwin writes
of the memoir: “The reader
marvels as Bernstein, equipped
with infi nite curiosity and grit,
goes from copyboy to news-
man, from chasing history to
making it.”
• If you are as frantic as
we are to do something about guns in America, check out
VoteMamaFoundation.org, a foundation designed to help moth-
ers with children at home who want to dive into politics. Maybe
mamas will be better on background checks and other reason-
able gun control laws than the papas have.
