ENDING PROHIBITION
political will. Calling and writing those
who represent us to promote legislation
like a renters tax credit can help this
come about. Our voices are what will cre-
ate the political will for this lofty goal.
Why not invite your representatives
to the Peace Park and then ask them to
work with you to end hunger and pover-
ty and usher in a new era of peace?

American Government 101 is pretty
clear: The chair of a committee can sin-
gle-handedly determine if a bill is going
to be called for a vote or not.
Never in American history has the
chairman of the House Judiciary Com-
mittee introduced a bill to end federal
cannabis criminalization.
This week, that has changed with the
actions of Representative Jerry Nadler
and his introduction of The Marijuana
Opportunity, Reinvestment and Ex-
pungement (MORE) Act.
After nearly a century of prohibition,
it is clear our drug policy has been an
absolute failure and a national disgrace.
All we have to show for the war we have
waged on cannabis is the egregious
harms it has wrought upon tens of mil-
lions of our fellow citizens.
More than 200 members have co-
sponsored one piece of legislation or an-
other having to do with cannabis policy,
but with the introduction of MORE, Rep.
Nadler has drawn the line in the sand.
By passing the act, Congress can be-
gin to remedy the pain caused by the
criminalization of cannabis. This bill
provides a real federal solution by fully
de-scheduling cannabis from the Con-
trolled Substances Act and providing
relief to those suffering under the col-
lateral consequences of having a canna-
bis charge on their record by facilitating
the process of expungements.
It’s time for a better approach. The
American public is overwhelmingly
ready to legalize adult-use cannabis.

GENDER POLITICS
I just love it when men “correct”
women’s opinions.
Take, for example, my letter pleading
for the plight of waterfowl being harmed
by people feeding them. So some man
reads my letter (EW, 7/3) and decides
that my idea is stupid and his idea —
that I should get out there with clippers
to uncover the signs — is the way better
solution — thank you, Tom Arnold (Let-
ters, 7/25).
And Linda Perrine’s ideas to lower
carbon footprints (EW, 7/18) — correct-
ed by Sal Pietromonico (Letters, 7/25).
I’m not saying that these obviously
intelligent males ideas aren’t valid. Per-
haps they are (especially the one about
fewer children). Maybe they could be
written about in separate letters, with-
out dismissing three women’s ideas.
And has anyone noticed the pro-
portion of men’s letters that are pub-
lished, compared to women’s letters?
Perhaps these obviously intelligent men
should examine their biases and voice
their opinions without the need to “cor-
rect” women.
Believe me, this is just one of the
many ways that “intelligent” men try to
keep us in line.
