Thanksgiving is a time to get together with friends and family and
stuff your face full of as much turkey and mashed potatoes as you
can handle. (It’s also a time to honor the indigenous peoples of our
country.) For those who don’t have a place to get a hot meal, there are
a couple great spots to stop by on turkey day. Friendly Street Church of
God (2290 Friendly Street) is holding its Annual Thanksgiving Dinner
with all the fixings noon to 3 pm on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov.
23. The Whiteaker Community is also holding a similar event at the
Whiteaker Community Head Start Center (21 N. Grand Avenue). That
dinner is 11 am to 3 pm. There will be giveaways for sleeping bags,
shelter materials, toiletries and more from 8 am to 2 pm. According to
its website, last year’s Whiteaker Community Dinner served over 2,000
men, women and children Thanksgiving dinner. Both of these events
are FREE. — Meerah Powell
