At 75, composer and singer-songwriter Carole King has a lifetime
of accomplishments to look back on, not the least of which is
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, playing now on Broadway,
with a touring version opening Oct. 11 at the Hult. King’s songs
define an era. “You’ve Got a Friend”, “So Far Away”, “I Feel the
Earth Move” — she’s from-another-planet good, having written
more than 100 billboard hits between 1955 and 1999. From
recording early demos with another Brooklyn hopeful named Paul
Simon, to authoring plenty of ’60s hits, to finding her own inimita-
ble sound, Beautiful follows King’s musical journey. King’s music
is part of the feminist soundtrack. And if you were a child in the
1970s, her iconic “Really Rosie” songs taught you everything you
would ever need to know. And she’s still fired up, recently releas-
ing a new version of her 1982 song “One Small Voice,” based on
the Hans Christian Andersen’s tale The Emperor’s New Clothes, as
a statement of protest against Donald Trump’s presidency.
