Education should be accessible to people regardless of income. This is in
no way a radical idea to those involved in the Summer Seminar Series.
That’s a series of free academic classes created for those who cannot
afford traditional education. “Our project offers formal academic expe-
riences to local un-housed, low income, and fixed income residents of
our community who find access to such experiences otherwise difficult,
if not impossible,” says Bill Ferrari, a teacher at Marist High School in-
volved in organizing the seminar. This year’s series includes nine classes
throughout the month of August taught by professors and alumni from
the University of Oregon, University of Washington and Northwest Chris-
tian University. The seminars happening this week include Emeritus Prof.
Alan Meyer from the UO’s Lundquist College of Business, on Aug. 10; Terry
Maresca, MD, from the University of Washington School of Medicine, on
Aug. 11; and Prof. Laura Holland from the UO American English Institute,
on Aug. 15. “Each class will discuss the notion of community from a par-
ticular academic discipline’s perspective,” according to the Summer Sem-
inar Series schedule.
All 2017 Summer Seminar Series classes take place from 11 am to noon in
the Parish Center at St. Mary’s Catholic Church (1062 Charnelton Street).
