When assimilating truly American musical styles like ’50s-
era rock, funk and surf music, as well as Jamaican ska, who
better to do so than — the Russians? Since the mid-’90s,
Russian-American L.A. act Red Elvises (now known as Igor &
The Red Elvises after the departure of long-time bassist known
only as Oleg Bernov) have developed this bathtub brew of
styles into a fun and energetic punk rock buzz. You never know
what you might see or hear at a Red Elvises’ show: maybe an
appearance from the traditional Russian instrument called the
Balalaika, or even a traditional Russian cover of Lady Gaga’s
pop hit “Bad Romance.” Just in time for the return of Red Scare:
