CALENDAR
Of all the holidays Eugene goes all-out in celebrating, it’s not surprising that Earth
Day is one of them. From park cleanups to rock festivals — the geode kind, that
is — there’s a little bit of something for everyone going on April 22. Here are a few
Earth-centric events happening this Sunday, check out the full calendar for the rest.
For some adult fun on Earth Day, check out the Brewshed Alliance’s Brewfest &
Celebration from 2-9 pm at Sprout! (418 A Street, Springfield). The event offers beer
tastings from breweries across Oregon, food and a raffle. All proceeds benefit Oregon
Wild, an environmental nonprofit “working to protect Oregon’s wildlands, wildlife and
waters,” according to the event’s website. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the
door. If you’re feeling like giving back to Mother Nature on Earth Day, stop by Mount
Pisgah Arboretum Visitor Center (34901 Frank Parrish Road.) from 10 am-1 pm for the
free Prune and Groom Work Party. Peek at the volunteer section in EW’s full What’s
Happening calendar for even more ways to get your hands dirty. If you like looking
at shiny, pretty things, you’ll want to check out the fifth annual Oregon Geo Fest
at Broadway Center (2100 W. Broadway). The fest offers vendor booths with gems,
minerals, crystals and fossils around the world, as well as giveaways, prize drawings,
music and food. It’s free and happening from 11 am-5 pm. For those wanting to spend
their Earth Day learning new things, stop by The Barn Light East at 2 pm for Science
Pub, a free event where local scientists talk about native plant and animal species and
community conservation efforts. And for more science, stop by the University of Ore-
gon campus at noon for the March For Science, starting at the EMU, to join scientists,
activists and community members to march for “science, research,
investigative integrity and the environment.” — Meerah Powell
