It’s the New Year, and a new set of great classes and events for kids at the various Eugene Public Library
branches. “The voters approved a ballot measure so starting in July we had a lot more funding,” Kristen
Thorp, youth services manager Eugene Public Library says. The extra funding created new kids, teens and
early literacy programs, meaning there are plenty of options for you and your little one in the New Year.
First there’s STEAM Storytime, “a way we can introduce STEM concepts to our youngest patrons,” Thorp says.
This event takes place every Monday at 3:30 pm, and focuses on science, technology, engineering and math
for preschoolers and kindergarteners, with art having a spot on months with a fifth Monday.
If you birthed a builder, Legos might be the right event for you. It’s for kids grades K-6, and you can drop
in on Wednesdays at 4 pm in the downtown library for constructive fun. The Sheldon and Bethel branches
have Saturday Lego times at 10:15 am and 2 pm respectively, and you can pre-register at 541-682-8316 or
eugene-or.gov/library.
Got a kid with an active imagination? Put it to use at Play Date on first Fridays at 6 pm. Play Date is “taking
low tech things like cardboard, Styrofoam blocks, and other things that don’t necessarily invoke playtime to
show that kids imaginations really drive what playtime is about,” Thorp says.
Feeling comfy? Drop in to Pajama Storytime at 6:30 pm every Tuesday at the downtown branch. It’s a weekly
event for kids ages 0-6 with stories, rhymes and songs to promote early literacy.
The library also has several ongoing events this year, like Family Music Time on Saturdays at 10:15 am,
Family Fun every Sunday at 1pm, and Dog Tale Time at the Bethel and Sheldon branches from 2-3:30 pm on
Saturday, Jan. 7. That last one is particularly adorable: your kids can learn to read with a canine! Thorp says
it’s “a fun way for kids to build up confidence with reading because they have a kind, non-judgmental listen-
ing ear.” Don’t forget to pre-register with the library for a spot!
Call 541-682-8316 or go to eugene-or.gov/library for more info on these events and more for adults. FREE.
