In reviewing her CV online, I note that
she was in college in 1966. Her publishing
history includes feminist, environmental
and senior issues.
I also researched Ms. Sayavedra online
[Letters, 11/23]. If I have accurately iden-
tified the person who wrote the letter in
EW entitled “No Excuse,” I found a young
Caucasian woman. If this is the letter’s
author, she schooled the readers regard-
ing a panoply of discrimination, including
what people who wear blackface are and
do. Most notably in this particular situa-
tion, she states, “People who wear black-
face are not trying to live a more authentic
life. People who wear blackface are not
discriminated against on a daily basis.”
As a woman who is probably three years
younger than Ms. Shurtz, I am here to tell
you that you have no clue what you are writ-
ing about. I just finished watching Michael
Moore in Trumpland. His description of the
experience for women our age was one of the
most spot-on I have ever experienced. (I also
took the course Women and the Law in law
school, as well as undergrad feminist theory
coursework. And I am a member of NOW.)
I invite Ana Sayavedra to educate her-
self, and anyone else who wants to under-
stand the daily experiences women our age
endured, and still endure, including and
especially Hillary. Then add ageism.
Eugene is a very progressive commu-
nity, as is the law school. When you review
Ms. Shurtz’s body of work, it would be
inconsistent with her published values to
ridicule people of color. To assume her in-
tent was disrespectful defies logic. People
do illogical things. I don’t see the motive
here. She has explained herself. I believe
her. Intent is everything. No prosecution
