It is entirely fair to compare Omaha native
Simon Joyner to songwriting giants like
Townes Van Zant and Bob Dylan. Joyner
writes intense, personal songs and reaches
for notes on the edge his vocal range without
much concern for whether he hits them. His
characters are weary, lonely and wry. The
music is off-kilter. What’s important when
he wails “I won’t go to your funeral, Sue,
but I got a couch if you ever need a place to
crash” in "Nostalgia Blues" is that the listener
understands why he says this and feels
the same way. Perfect scales and precise
strumming would only get in the way here.
Simon Joyner and David Nance play an
undisclosed Eugene living room this Sunday,
Oct. 16, at 7:30 pm. Get tickets here
