Ever accidently get way too stoned way too fast and suddenly
your brain is spinning sticky webs of neurotic fear and
paranoia until you feel like Woody Allen on bad acid? Wouldn’t
it have been nice, during that endless moment, to have a
kind, gentle and pot-smart voice whispering sage advice into
your ear? Well, author David Schmader is that voice. A stage
performer and longtime columnist for Seattle alt weekly The
Stranger, Schmader has written Weed: The User’s Guide, a
“21st century handbook for enjoying marijuana” that takes
newbies and users alike through the ABCs of cannabinoid
culture. From a brief history of weed (“Which presidents were
potheads?”) to modes of ingestion, types of weed and the
varieties of effects — including more specific rubrics like
marijuana etiquette, munchies navigation and, yes, what to
do “if you’re high and don’t like it” — Schmader covers all the
stoner bases in a voice that is at once generous, funny and
sharp, though never pushy (in his words, he refuses “reck-
less encouragement” to smoke pot). “I want the book to be a
smart, honest guide to weed and its life enhancing potential
that keeps readers delighted on a sentence-by-sentence ba-
sis,” Schmader says. “I wanted it to be like a guide to scotch
or coffee — knowledgeable info for interested parties.”
