As if we needed another reason to despise Los Angeles: Last week, UO’s tough-as-nails
women's basketball team left Eugene undefeated after 11 games. They fl ew to L.A. and
came home Monday downcast after two losses, fi rst at the hands of UCLA and then to
USC. The Lady Ducks lead powerhouse UCLA into the second half, when Bruins guards
Nirra Fields and Kari Korver began sinking three-pointers like they’d suddenly grown
bored with scoring only two points at a time. The USC game followed a similar arcing
trajectory. But, the past is the past. And jocks know sport is about the present moment
and the future. Looking ahead, UO’s losses in L.A. set up an intriguing matchup against
rivals to the north, OSU’s Beavers. The She Beavs are fi erce, high-ranked PAC 12 players
who shut down USC only a few days ago — a game in which senior Ruth Hamblin scored
her 1,000th career point. Basketball fans know this could be 2015-16’s real Civil War
game. And tickets are cheap! And it happens twice, Friday and Sunday, though only one is
a home game. And probably nobody’ll show up because women’s b-ball gets no respect.
UO women’s basketball meets OSU 7pm Friday, Jan. 8, in Corvallis’ Gill Coliseum. They
compete again noon Sunday, Jan. 10, at Matthew Knight Arena, 1776 E. 13th Ave.; $6-$12.
