GARY BARTHELMY, OYSTER FISHERMAN
POR TR AIT BY SPILL DR AM ATURGE
REE VA WOR TEL
MONDAY
A little more than fi ve years ago the British Petroleum oil rig Deepwater Horizon exploded and sank to the bottom of the ocean
near the Mississippi River Delta in the Gulf of Mexico. The explosion killed 11 people. Countless more were harmed by exposure
to oil and the chemical dispersants used to clean up the mess. Before engineers could cap off the well, approximately 210 mil-
lion gallons of oil had spewed into the gulf waters. Reports from last year indicate that the ocean there is still toxic. Scientists
with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said tuna spawned in the region show physical deformities and
heart defects. Folks at BP, however, deny any causal link between the spill and the area’s ailing marine life. They say the Gulf of
Mexico is healing itself just fi ne. Written and directed by Leigh Fondakowski, SPILL tells the story of the largest environmental
disaster in U.S. history in the words of the people who witnessed it, caused it and covered it in the news. Fondakowski based
the performance, which opens Friday at LCC, on hundreds of interviews she conducted with help from artist Reeva Wortel.
Part of the Oregon Performance Lab project, SPILL begins 7pm Friday and Saturday, Aug. 14 & 15, at the Lane Community
College Performance Hall, 4000 E. 30th Ave.; tickets are $8-$16, oregonperformancelab.com.
