The University of Oregon has more than
450 veterans on campus. According
to UO Veterans and Family Student
Association member Jared Smith,
most students have had a class with
a veteran but “never engaged with a
veteran about their experiences.” Phil
Klay is author of the 2014 National
Book award-winning collection of short
stories, Redeployment, in which he
joins a long literary tradition of war vets
coming home and telling the story of
the confl ict in which they served. Klay
was deployed as a public aff airs offi cer
with the U.S. Marine Corps in Iraq’s
Anbar Province from January 2007
to February 2008. After coming back
to the U.S., he got his MFA — bringing
together his war experiences with a
liberal arts education. His stories tell
of soldiers forced to shoot dogs eating
human corpses and of collecting
human remains but also include dark comedy, such as in the story “Money as a Weapons
System,” in which a young foreign service offi cer is tasked with improving Iraqi lives by
teaching them to play baseball.
The Veterans and Family Student Association at the UO presents an evening with
Phil Klay, 7 pm Thursday, May 21, in 156 Straub Hall on the UO campus. Klay’s talk,
cosponsored by the Oregon Humanities Center, is free and open to the public. It will be
followed by a book signing.
