Philip Deloria examines the curious and
painful dynamics surrounding Indian
visibility in popular culture and discusses
Metamora, Last of the Mohicans, Hiawatha,
Cher, dreamcatchers, motorcycles, sports
teams, George Catlin, Buffalo Bill, Avatar,
The Lone Ranger, among others—paired
with Indian invisibility in most social,
economic, and political discussion. Deloria
combines the arguments of his books Playing Indian and Indians
in Unexpected Places to advance the case for Indian people’s deep
engagements with modernity over the last 120 years.
Philip Deloria is the Carroll Smith-Rosenberg Collegiate Professor
at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with a joint appointment
in the departments of History, and American Culture.
