NE W S
rently, Mahmood is examining the status of non-Muslim
minorities in the Middle East. Her keynote lecture for
the anniversary celebration will explore the Egyptian
novel Azazel, which was translated into 20 languages
and won the International Prize for Arabic Fiction, but
met adversity when orthodox Christians in Egypt took
offense to its Islam-centric contents and tried to ban the
book.
Mahmood says this case is comparable to similar up-
sets in Western culture, when religious groups react to
criticism or mocking of their religion.
“We tend to think, ‘Oh, these are just religiously sen-
sitive people who can’t stand American commitment to
freedom of expression,’” Mahmood says. “But we can’t
say that this is simply religious anger. We need to try
to understand the serious nature of their objection, and
unless we begin to do this, we will continue to engage
in incomprehensible chatter which reinforces our preju-
dices against each other.”
Mahmood’s lecture, “Secular Humanism and Reli-
gious Confl ict: Muslim-Christian Debates in Egypt,” is
open to the public as part of the three-day celebration
for the UO’s Department of Comparative Literature,
which has the distinction of being the oldest compara-
tive literature program on the West Coast. The lecture
starts at 4 pm Friday, Nov. 2, in 182 Lillis Hall, followed
by a reception at the Papé Reception Hall in the Jordan
Schnitzer Museum of Art. — Amy Schneider
Rep. Peter DeFazio has been quoting Art Robinson’s
own words on billboards. Robinson claims that these
words make him look crazy. There is a sure way for
Robinson to avoid looking crazy: He can announce
that he is voting for DeFazio.

WARM CLOTHING
COLLECTED BY EPD
Eugene police are once again coordinating the collection
of warm clothing, boots and other various winter weather
items to be distributed to community service agencies that
help the homeless community stay warm this winter.
Offi cer Randy Ellis has spearheaded the collection for
the past several years and last year West University Neigh-
borhood residents Don and Anne Dezarn pledged to match
up to $2,500 of funds collected after seeing the success of
previous years and the impact on this vulnerable population.
This year the Dezarns are offering to match up to $3,500
raised through this outreach. In addition to the donations of
shoes, blankets and coats, the money raised purchasd more
than 75 pairs of warm boots, 110 gloves, more than 200
pairs of socks, more than 100 sleeping bags, backpacks
and countless other items.
Ellis will be collecting donations of clothing and checks
at the West University Station near campus at 791 East
13th Ave. through Nov. 19 for delivery to local service
agencies.
