We’re spoiled with a great wealth of poetry readings that take place on
the regular in Eugene. This is a great thing. That inundation of readings,
however, can at times cause us to overlook some of the strongest readers
and most compelling poetry.
DIVA will be hosting A New Poetry Series Saturday with guest poets
Jared Stanley, David Abel and Cecelia Hagen, all of whom are evocative
and venerated wordsmiths. Even in our poetry-soaked town of verse-
slinging virtuosos, these three writers stand out.
Stanley, the Arizona-born, Reno-based poet from the Unmanned
Minerals art collective is the author of the cult chapbook How the Desert
Did Me In, as well as a newer collection of poems entitled The Weeds.
He’s also an Iowa Writer’s Workshop alum. Abel, a Portland poet, radio
personality, teacher and bookseller, is a cross-disciplinary whirlwind of
words. And Hagen is a Pacifi c Northwest superstar whose writing has
appeared in Blood Orange Review, Caffeine Destiny and Rolling Stone.
This isn’t some average open-mic night, it’s a celebration of excellent
contemporary poets and their work — go and listen.
A New Poetry Series begins 7:30pm Saturday, July 28, at DIVA.
