Springfield’s initial SCYP is wrapping up this spring
and a celebration is planned from 4:30 to 6:30 pm Friday,
May 18, at the Royal Caribbean International Call Center
in Springfield. UO students, faculty, Springfield
government officials and community partners will gather
to review the work of 500 students who participated in 10
disciplines: planning, public policy, business, law,
economics, journalism, sustainability, architecture,
landscape architecture, and arts and administration.
Springfield’s SCY program consisted of 31 classes
and 60,000 hours of creative work focused on making
Springfield a more sustainable city.
The program is evolving and might even draw in OSU’s
Department of Horticulture next year, says Liberty. But the
SCYP is an ambitious program and it takes about $250,000
a year in funding from cities or counties to keep it going.
“We are pursuing addition sources of funding, but nothing
has been nailed down yet,” says Liberty.
Eugene applied for the program several years ago, but
did not reapply this year, citing the high cost and the city’s
existing sustainability programs.

The Willamette Angel Conference competition at the
Downtown Athletic Club May 10 awarded a $200,000
investment prize to Cascade Prodrug Inc., a Eugene-based
drug development company using technology licensed from
UO. Other finalists included Amorphyx of Corvallis and Vizme
of Eugene. A combination of cash and consulting services
valued at $7,000 also went to Coyle Design, a Corvallis
company that makes hand-crafted wood and cork bicycle

A new farmers market is starting up in the Whiteaker

Valley River Inn is undergoing renovation of the entire
property and the 275-room inn on the waterfront should be
back to normal by June 1. The staff is leading tours of the
project every Tuesday from 4 to 7 pm with complimentary
wine tasting.
McKenzie River Trust, a local nonprofit working to
protect clean water and fish and wildlife habitat in western
Oregon, is busy leading bird and nature hikes this spring. On
Earth Day, Oakshire Brewing gave MRT $1,774, proceeds from
three beers brewed to commemorate EWEB’s 100th
anniversary. Earlier, the Eugene-based retailer Tactics gave
$2,500 in support of MRT’s local land conservation efforts.
The Trust recently purchased and protected 161 acres of
