ACTIVIST ALERT
• Phone banking, canvassing and other
activities in support of progressive candidates
are being organized by the Oregon League of
Conservation voters. Canvassing and calling for
Rob Handy, Pete Sorenson, Kitty Piercy and
Betty Taylor will continue until the election.
“Enviro phones” for Handy will be from 5:30 to
8:30 pm Thursday, May 10, and from 4 to 7 pm

• Speakers from Coal Export Action and
Portland Rising Tide will lead a discussion on
coal exports in the Pacific Northwest and the
global consequences of coal mining,
transportation and combustion, at 7 pm

• The 128th monthly Interfaith Prayer
Service will be at 7 pm Friday, May 11, at the

• The 13th annual Million Mom March for
gun safety will begin with a rally at 2 pm
Sunday, May 13, at EWEB Plaza. The theme this
year is “No Guns in Schools.” This is an all-
family event that includes a one-mile walk from
EWEB along the riverfront bike path to Owens
Rose Garden for cookies. To help, call 344-

• The LTD Board of Directors will hold its
second and final public hearing on a proposal to
raise passenger fares, at 5:30 pm Monday, May
14, at the Eugene Public Library. Comments can

• Public transit expert Jarrett Walker will
talk about “Eugene-Springfield Transit: What
are the Real Questions?” at 6 pm Wednesday,
May 16, at 182 Lillis on the UO campus. Earlier
that day he will hold a workshop on network
planning principles, limited attendance. Email

• Green Party presidential candidate Jill
Stein, MD, will be appearing at public events in
Portland and Corvallis during a visit to Oregon
next week. She will speak at 5 pm Wednesday,
May 16, at the Martha Room, 1165 NW Monroe in
Corvallis. Stein is a Boston physician and
co-founder of Massachusetts Coalition for
