We know that Oregon’s most celebrated
indie-classical music group Portland Cello
Project (PCP) is no new name on the lips
of Eugeneans. Anyone keeping tabs on the
Pacifi c Northwest’s music scene knows that
this band is no mere novelty act, but rather
a serious collective of musicians who push
the envelope. Cello players of this caliber
can make any genre of music sound epic,
and this group has put in work. Case in
point: PCP’s new album Homage, full of
music by some of this century’s trendiest
composers. The work of modern music’s
great communicators, Shawn Corey Carter,
K. Omari West and Dwayne Michael Carter,
Jr., will be among the smorgasbord of
delightful sounds ringing through WOW
Hall on Wednesday, April 18.
PCP makes the classical renditions of
popular songs sound natural as well as
vibrant, and the show will likely contain
music by Osvaldo Golijov, Outkast and
other genre-jumping music legends.
These amazing cellists will be joined by
their frequent collaborators during the
CD release show that will grace Eugene
— the Alialujah Choir, comprising
members of Weinland and Norfolk and
Western. This is arguably the best show
in town, a performance not to be missed
and a CD you should probably fi nd a way
to get.
