How To Live
with Professor James Earl (English)
Saturday mornings, April 7, 14, 21, and 28 (9:30 a.m.–noon)
Browsing Room, 106 Knight Library, 1501 Kincaid Street
Sarah Bakewell’s new best-selling biography of Michel de Montaigne is entitled
How to Live—and that is the subject of Montaigne’s Essais, which is on every list
of Great Books. A contemporary of Shakespeare, Montaigne invented the personal
essay, and used it to produce one of the world’s most vivid, wise, and amiable
self-portraits. “Who touches this book touches the author,” he says. Bakewell’s
book will be an excellent guide. Cost: $90
End of Life Ethics
with Courtesy Associate Professor Peg Brand (Clark Honors College)
Monday evenings, May 7, 14, 21, and June 4 (6:30–9:00 p.m.)
Browsing Room, 106 Knight Library, 1501 Kincaid Street
This seminar will explore the value judgments of patients, family members,
caregivers, and doctors at the end of life, in a medical-ethical context. How does
one prepare for death, and how does one die, particularly if diagnosed with
a terminal illness? In Oregon there is also the Death with Dignity Act, which
permits physician-assisted suicide, to consider. What could be more important
and meaningful to think about than the ethical issues we face with the inevitable
deaths of our parents, loved ones, and ourselves? Cost: $90
