between cats through the casual interaction
of sharing food bowls, litter boxes or toys.
The potential for FIV to spread is through
a deep bite to the skin resulting in saliva-
to-blood contact or a mother cat can give it
to her kittens
But this does not mean FIV cats shouldn’t
live with disease-free cats, McDonnell says.
Most cats like Sheriff get along with others
within the same household and concern over
the disease spreading is often inflated, she
says.
There are vaccinations to prevent FIV in
cats, and some veterinarians recommend it
for outdoor cars, but it is controversial,
according to McDonnell.
Sheriff is a special story of triumph for
WCDC. He was transferred from Lane
County Animal Shelter (LCAS) five months
ago with a severe wound on his neck after
being rescued off the street. He has been
successfully nursed back to health despite
having FIV, which makes it harder to recover.
He and others will be apart of WCDC
and LCAS adoption event called “A 2nd
Chance at Love,” starting Friday Feb. 10.
The Valentine’s Day event will be held at
the PetSmart off Coburg Road until
Sunday, Feb. 12.

KEEPING THE
SHRED DREAM ALIVE
LOCAL MIXED
MARTIAL ARTS COMPETITION
Eugene resident, LCC student and snowboarded Kyle Richner
won a nationally competitive scholarship from Academy
Snowboard Company for his ability to mix the fun of snowboarding
with school and work.
“We chose Kyle because of his love for snowboarding, drive
to get kids stoked on and off hill, and entrepreneurial spirit,”
Erich Dummer, media director of Academy Snowboards said in
an article in Transworld Snowboarding. “We know it’s not a lot of
money right now, but we’re always stoked to give back to the
snowboard community and keep the shred dream alive for fellow
riders that are sacrificing powder days while going to school,” he
added.
Richner, 21, is a passionate snowboarder who has been
boarding since he was 12. “I started getting really serious about
three years ago — I rode about 98 times last winter,” he said.
“Now I’m competing and working as a snowboard instructor.” To
be considered for the scholarship, he submitted a video essay
and riding footage to Academy Snowboard. He won 1 percent of
the local region’s sales, about $500, to put towards his tuition,
two snowboards and a free summer session at Windells Ski
Resort in Sandy, Ore.
A sophomore at LCC, Richner plans to transfer to the UO
next year to study business. He aspires to one day open his own
snowboarding and skateboarding shop — he won the scholarship
in part because of his creative entrepreneurial spirit. With the
prize money, he said, he is looking forward spending a little less
time shuffling pizzas at Domino’s and a little more time hitting
both the books and the slopes.
Applications for next year’s foundation scholarship are due
on April 14. “I think you should keep pushing yourself,” Richner
says to aspiring snowboarders. “It’s important to go beyond
your comfort zone and never give up.”

The folks at Midtown MMA are at it again with their third in a
series of mixed martial arts shows, highlighting local fighters and
local gyms. Midtown Throwdown III will present a 16-fight card
starting at 6 pm Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Lane Events Center. Each
match will consists of three three-minute rounds, where fighters
may win by way of knockout, submission, technical knockout or
decision.
“These are all exciting match ups with fighters who are
hungry to show their skills,” says heavyweight competitor and
local mixed martial arts journeyman Jimmy Jennet. “Fighting
keeps you humble. And all these guys put so much work into their
training; it’s really going to be exciting.”
The night will be a showcase of amateur and pro fighters, with
a stacked undercard and two marquis matchups to look out for.
Main event Corey Wyatt will compete in his professional debut
against Darrio Mobley, and two-time Pac 10 wrestling champ All-
American Colby Covington will face off against ground-and-
pound slugger Chris Ensley in the co-main event. Also not to be
missed is the amateur heavyweight tournament, which will
feature two giants, Jimmy Jennet and Anthony “The Joker”
McDonald, as they square off against each other for the belt.
