The Road to Annie
Theater reviewers know better than to write a review of children’s theater. But
that doesn’t mean we’re not interested in the process or the unique trials and joys
of bringing anything from Grease to Princess and the Pea to The Grinch to life.
This winter, I’m following Upstart Crow Studios’ production of Annie from auditions
(which occurred before the winter break) to the fi nal production, March 6-7 and
12-13. Originally, I planned on one fi nal story as a cover for the paper, and that’s
still in the works. But journalists have learned that we need to open our process up
and let people see how it works, so I’m posting to the blog and tweeting at the @
eugeneweekly account from rehearsal as well. A colleague, Amanda Burhop, will likely
be helping me in the effort to follow the three-month process, and we’ll get video,
audio, photos and of course interviews and stories up on the web, and my arts intern
Rachel Coussens may also participate in the planned multimedia approach. You can
fi nd a blog post from the fi rst rehearsal, for this production which features 88 different
cast members, at http://wkly.ws/37, and on Monday nights and some Thursdays, we’ll
be using #theroadtoAnnie as our hashtag on Twitter.
Bravo focuses on Hult Center
companies, the UO, established performing
arts institutions and, when we have their
info, young arts companies that have
found a way to become scrappy upstarts.
(I emphasize when we have their info
because even though I might be a fan of
your company on Facebook or follow you
on Twitter, I’m not the only person at the
Weekly, and I’m not always here: It’s key
to send us email, especially the calendar
editor, cal at eugeneweekly dot com.)
In that mix, here’s what I see going on
with social media and outreach to audience
members: The Eugene Ballet, in a smart
example of ways to connect, asked its
audience members to be open about taking
photos of Sleeping Beauty. The Oregon
Bach Festival uses its Facebook fan
page and Twitter feed occasionally, and
I imagine this use will increase as we get
closer to the festival.
The Lord Leebrick and the Eugene
Opera both have fairly good Twitter feeds.

opera, told me that he and the board made
a decision to invest in social media, and
what with live-blogging from backstage,
Facebook links, photos of rehearsal and
YouTube videos of opera principals from
other companies, I’d say that decision and
investment have paid off. But if you think
opera’s uncontroversial, you should take a
look at the comments on my opera preview
story (http://wkly.ws/27) and weigh in.
I long to see the well-managed Eugene
Symphony on Twitter and Facebook,
to hear a clip on the OMP blog of Glen
Cortese or principal orchestra members
talking about the Oregon Mozart Players
(board president Robert Canaga, who’s on
Facebook, certainly posts about the OMP),
to see some of the Very Little Theatre’s
awe-inspiring collection of historical
photos pop up on Twitpic, and oh, so much
more.
In the meantime, I’ll be posting a series
of interviews and thoughts on arts funding
and arts education on the blog. Please join
ew
in the discussion.

Friday Art Walk on fi ve stops, starting
with the newish Brenner’s Green Living
Gallery at 151 W. 8th and continuing to
Fenario, White Lotus, the Jacobs Gallery

Tweet up the Jacobs Gallery’s
have to go in order; you don’t have to go
Cheryl Camelio this Friday
only to the fi ve stops (so many galleries
and stores stay open during First Friday that downtown should be packed), you don’t
even have to meet up with us anywhere. Just post photos, artist quotes, your thoughts,
etc. to Twitter using the hashtag (that’s the pound, or number, sign in front of a word)
#ArtRovers and/or #FirstFriday. Eugeneans on Twitter will soon know where to look for
reports on the night itself, and I’ll post some tweets and photos to the blog over the
weekend. Email me at suzi at eugeneweekly dot com or ping me on Twitter
(@suzisteffen or @eugeneweekly) if you want to know more or give your ideas.
