The roots of the Veselka dance tradition are buried deep in the
soil of the Russian Ukraine. Veselka Ukrainian Dance
Company celebrates those roots in performances at 11 am and
2 pm in the Mother of God Ukrainian Church in Springfield.
Master dance teacher, Leo Piasta, a first generation Canadian-
Ukrainian, comes to Springfield each summer to provide a fine-
tuned edge to the dancers through an intensive three-week
rehearsal schedule. Ranging in age from 5 to 25, the 75 color-
ful performers whirl and gyrate to complex choreography,
including the Hopak, the national dance of Ukraine known for
its male acrobatic solos and female fast-paced footwork. See
Saturday Calendar.
