Letters from the Librarian
“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”
— Arthur Ashe
We love a September day -
- the beginning of the school year,
a glorious last hurrah of sunshine
and garden produce, the transition
from summer to autumn. There’s no
“reading season,” but if there were,
then I submit that fall would be a top
contender, when readers everywhere
sigh with anticipation of cozy evenings
reading.
The YonDr Book Club, a
collaboration between Yoncalla and
Drain libraries, is reading The Little
Book of Hygge in September. Hygge
is a Danish word for cozy comfort and
the book focuses on how to incorporate
a little hygge into your world. The
meeting this month is in Yoncalla on
September 12 at 7 p.m. It’s open to
all and a great way to connect with
neighbors. Contact either library for
how to log in virtually if you’d like
to stay extra cozy at home and still
discuss the book. October’s read is a
youth title by Lindsay Puckett: The
Odds. And in November the group
will read and discuss Fresh Brewed
Murder by Emmeline Duncan.
In other library program news,
the garden club continues to meet
the second Saturday of each month
at the Mildred Whipple Library on A
Street in Drain. This month they’re
discussing fall and winter gardening.
Right now library staff and
volunteers are reading a lot of The
Ball Blue Book of Preserving (garden
produce!). My personal to-be-read pile
is leaning like a sunflower reaching
for rays of light. Most every autumn
I fall into atmospheric, moody books
with a mix of classics and a somewhat
new-to-me favorite genre of cozy
mysteries. What’s on your TBR list?
We can help fill it at the library.
One last request from us to you:
Would you consider filling out the
North Douglas Library District survey?
It is open through September 30 and
will help us determine community
needs and wishes for library
programs, resources, and services. All
community members of any age are
invited to reply. Find it on our website
at https://ndld.org/survey or stop in the
library for a printed copy.
Wishing you a cozy and lovely
September -- and hoping to see you
soon at the library.
