Drain City Yard Sale Aug 10
The Drain City Wide Yard Sale is set for
Saturday August 10th. Officially the site is at the Civic
Center Park, but there will likely be yard sales all across
town and even on the outskirts. Although there is no yard
sale maps this year, some of the participants are the First
Baptist Church on Payton Ave and Living Hope Outreach
Church on West “C” Ave and I’m sure all it will take is a
little drive through town to locate all the sales.
The Drain Yard Sale has been a tradition
for over 18 years but the original planners have retired
from the promotion, in late June, Mayor Erin Sparhawk,
announced it was back on. Although there seems no actual
sponsor for the event, the July City Council approved the
event to take place at the Drain Civic center Park, behind
the Center at 205 West A Ave. The park will open at 5am
for set up - and the Sales will commence after 7am. The
main admonishment from the Council is that all sellers are
to monitor and clean up after themselves.
Even without official oversight by the City, the park will
be available for anyone to set up and if past years are any
indication, the entire town of Drain should be teeming
with sale clusters all over town. Next year Katie Decker
promises to plan and promote the yard sale as a benefit for
local sports teams.

Cottage Grove Recall is a Yes Vote for All
It appears that Voters in Cottage Grove
have decided to remove three of their city council
members from office.
Initial returns in the July 30th recall
election shows that about 61 percent of ballots were
cast in favor of ending the terms of Mike Fleck, Alex
Dreher and Chalice Savage. The three councilors
were on the ballot separately but the vote totals were
nearly identical for each of them.
Initial results, for the recall election was
at 37 percent turnout. Lane County Elections office
does not plan to release another update until Aug. 6.
The election was only open to voters living in Cottage
Grove city limits.
Chief petitioner Michael Borke said
supporters of the recall were unhappy with the
council’s handling of a number of issues, including
a perceived lack of action to address the number of
unhoused people living in Cottage Grove’s public
spaces.
Dreher, one of the targeted councilors, said
even though results aren’t official yet, she’s accepted
that the outcome will mean she’ll soon have to vacate
the office.

“Every ending is a new beginning,” she
said, adding that she plans to continue to look for
volunteer opportunities to serve Cottage Grove, albeit
in an unelected capacity.
“I am concerned that the chaos and
division caused by the recall is affecting people
who want to do business in our community, as well
as our options to get federal and state grants,” she
said. “I mean, who will want to invest in a chaotic
environment? It doesn’t necessarily bode well.”
If results hold, the remaining city council
would still be able to meet until replacements are
appointed or elected.
Borke said that’s because he made sure
his recall effort would still leave a quorum of elected
officials even if it were successful. He said he hopes
the new council members will listen to the concerns
of the community.
“I hope that they bring a balance to the city council
and that they truly, really look at the issues that are out
there,” he said. “You’re not going to make everybody
happy, but you can make a heck of a lot more people
(happy) when more people have a say in what the
process is.”
