Alpine concert scries proves popular
WELCHES
The rising populari
ty of the Alpine Concerts series at
Rippling River Resort this summer
w ill lead to a second set of concerts
there next year, says Scott Candland,
general manager of the resort.
About 2,500 .persons heard a folk
and bluegrass music performance
Sunday, the highest number to attend
any of the firs t five concerts in the
series of seven, Candland said
The series continues at 2 p in Sun
day, Aug. 16, with Portland jazz
m usician s Tom G ra n t, S h irle y
Nanette and Ron Steen, and ends at 2
p in . Aug 23 with the Santa Fe
i N ,M . i Chamber Orchestra
The concerts are free for those
jy itin g brunch beforehand at R ippl
ing River, or $5 for adults and $3 for
children younger than age 10. They
are performed on the seventh fa ir
way on the western side of the resort
at 68010 E Eairway Ave.
The concerts, along with bicycle
races later this month and a walking
clinic and jigsaw puzzle contest this
fa ll, are designed to introduce
tourists to the Mount Hood corridor.
Candland said
• We had a lot of Washington ic a r
license I plates yesterday," Candland
observed.
The series also serves as a fund
raiser for Portland's public radio,
KOAP 91 EM, m arking its '25th an
niversary this year
W e ll-kn o w n ta le n t and good
weather accounted for Sunday's con
cert turnout, he said Rrunch reser
vations were filled a few weeks ago
The concert featured Ram blin'
Jack E llio tt and Gram m y Awards-
winning IXx/ Watson and John H a rt
ford, the latter best known for
w riting "Gentle On My Mind
As of Monday, the resort had book
ed 700 reservations for this Sunday's
brunch and had 150 spots left.
U ntil last Sunday, weather ranging
"fro m awful to bearable' had kept
down attendance at the series The
seven concerts in 1988 are set for
August and September, which should
coincide with favorable weather To
avoid conflicts, this summer's series
was timed around the Sandy Moun
ta in F e stiva l and M ount Hood
Festival of Jazz, he noted
The concert series is intended to
a ttract new people to the mountain
a re a," Candland said, adding. Why
fight for that'’ It's better to spread it
(the benefiti around."
