The reason? Funderberg says it is
^perianee. With 1» starters back
last year, he is confident a win-
idng season is in the making.

Fimderbesg said. “ For our first prac

game to be a complement to the pass
ing game.
"We ll run a lot of veer and
option,” said Funderberg of Sandy ’s
offensive sets “ We ll run out of the I
(formation) and run a lot of mis
direction plays. Our offensive line
has gotten handled in the past We re
going to have more confidence in the
run this year which w ill open up our
passing game. We’ll throw the ball a
lot — probably 30 times a game.
“ We’re not going to throw any
more than we have. We’re going to
throw more effectively."
Receivers that Spanier will be look
ing for are Stacey Pearson, Tony
Weaver, flanker; and Rob Spanier,
quarterback.
Defensively, returning starters in
clude: Gerald Hale, free safety;
M a rk Shank, le ft ta c k le ; B ill
Christman, nose guard; and Dean
Harris, tackle.
Funderberg added th at three
seniors are battling for the fullback
spot.
Sandy’s offensive line w ill be an
important ingredient to a successful
season. In the past. Mount Hood Con
fe re n c e powerhouses such as
Gresham and Barlow shut down San
dy's running game This season,
Funderberg expects the running
O
Hale, Gerald Hale, Dan Weaver and
Randy Wheeler.
“ We like to be pretty diversified,”
said Funderberg "We re not afraid
to pass on first down and we may run
on third and long, too ”
Sandy is faced with a tough
schedule the first half of the season.
Its first opponent is David Douglas on
Friday. Sept 5, with a non-counter
against Milwaukie and an away
game at Gresham to follow.
