SAN DIEGO — Advancements in
design and technology have taken
Navy fighter aircraft from the single
engine biplane to the supersonic
space-age jets we have today Navy
fighter pilots have had to change with
their aircraft.
Making sure today's fighter pilots
are trained to their fullest is the job
of the Navy Fighter Weapons School
at M iram ar Naval A ir Station, north
of here And keeping the school’s jets
in top condition is the job of sailors
like Linda Schenk
The 22-year-old daughter of Nancy
Ann Conner of Vancouver is a plane
captain in the squadron's line d ivi

"Some of the duties I perform are
“ Just about everything involved
with what I do here is a learning ex
perience. and that’s a challenge for
me. On the days that pilots are doing
a lot of flying the plane, captains are
really kept busy. I learn a lot on those
days because of the hectic pace and
the amount of work it takes to launch
one of those jets,” says Schenk
TO P G U N , as the school is
nicknam ed, tra in s experienced
fighter and adversary aircrews at
the advanced level in both a ir combat
maneuvering (dogfighting I and fleet
a ir defense. Other areas of training
include aspects of fighter weapons
systems, tactics, technique, pro
cedures and doctrine.
The course includes approximately
75 classroom hours on topics ranging
from aircraft performance to Soviet
pilot training and tactics. Airborne
training consists of 35 flights during
which students fly against F-5 and
A-4 adversary a ircraft flown by
TOPGUN instructors The F-5 and
A-4 jets were chosen because their
size and performance closely resem
ble current Soviet fighters.
TOPGUN often takes its school on
the road in small groups called
detachments tdets) as part of a class
or to present a shorter version of the
course These dets usually last from
five days to two weeks, and visit air
stations throughout the country
“ The part of working in TOPGUN
that I enjoy most is going out on dets
For one thing I get to travel a lot. I
also get to meet new people The
travel allows me an opportunity to
get away from things here and see
something new,” says Schenk
A 1981 graduate of Sandy High
School. Schenk entered the Navy in
M a rch 1984 She re p o rte d to

“ I joint'd to take advantage of the
Navy's educational benefits and pro
grams. 1 decided on the Navy
because 1 thought it was the best
Aviation sounded fun also. I hadn’t
done anything like it before, so it was
new to m e," she says.

" I ’ve become a much more respon
sible person since joining the Navy.
My job calls for a great deal of
respo sibility — as a plane captain I
have to make sure that the aircraft
I ’m working on is in working order
and ready to fly.
“ Being part of TOPGUN is a good
feeling and the work I ’m doing is a
part of that feeling. 1 know that what
we do here influences what happens
in fighter squadrons throughout the
fleet," says Schenk
