PUBLIC NOTICE OF
FILING OF GENERAL TELEPHONE
RATE CHANGE APPLICATION
On March 8,1985, General Telephone Company of the Northwest Inc. filed with the Public Utility
Commissioner of Oregon revised rate schedules to establish new rates for its Oregon customers
If approved as submitted, the new rates requested would represent an increase of $7439,192 in
annual local revenue or an increase of 101 percent The average residential customer's monthly
bill for network access would increase a total of 91 cents per month
Why Are We Proposing New Rates?
We are seeking revised rates for the following reasons. First, we need to recover an annual
revenue loss caused by the discontinuance of the surcharge on in-state long distance calls
Second, we need to meet revenue requirements associated with increased investment activities
Those activities are not being fully offset by revenue growth At the same time, we seek to maintain
a reasonable earnings level
This annual revenue would be obtained by:
- A n addition to the network access rates. Single-line residential access rates would increase a
total of 91 cents per month, single-line business access rates would increase $2 03 per month
trunks would increase $314 per month and semi-public access rates would inc n ;ase $2 26
per month
- A restructuring of installation charges, which includes increases and decreases making them
relate to the work actually performed
- A n increase in the charge for directory assistance from 20 cents to 50 cents per call and a
decrease in the free call allowance from five to two
- A n increase in the leased rates for company-provided standard single-line telephone instru
ments from $1 to $1 85
—An increase in the premium rates for Touch Call telephones leased from the company (r m 50
cents to 65 cents.
As part of the filing, the company is asking for interim rates effective on April 8.1985. to r«-< Tver
$1,950,972 in annual revenue lost through discontinuance of a three-cen, per minute surcharge on
in-state long-distance calls handled by local exchange companies, such as General Telephone The
surcharge was discontinued December 31,1984
