The Sandy Grade School carnival and chili feed has been
plagued by inclement weather, resulting in two cancellations.
These clowns are holding up a sign that probably reflects the
attitudes of the organizers well — carnival or bust. The chili
feed w ill be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the school, and the
carnival w ill last till 9. Pictured in back is Nolan O’Meara. In
front is Aaron O’Meara, left, and Kelly Key.

Some plants blooming in the yard
almost every month of the year? It
sounds like a landscaper's dream
However, with careful selection
from the wealth of ornamental plants
available, one can almost ensure
around-the-year blooming of various
plants in the home landscape
One group of ornamental plants
that can supply continous color to the
yard are the heathers. Heather, and
heather like plants include those that
belong to the Calluna, Erica and
Daboecia genera
From the 50 or more varieties in
cluded in these categories, you can
plan a yard landscape that would
have color any month of the year
One of the earliest to bloom is the
Erica carnea variety, "Springwood
W hite,” and its close realative, "Spr
i ng wood Pink ” These heathers come
into bloom during January in mild
climate areas and will bloom until
m id -s p rin g when the v a r ie t y
“ V ive lli" comes into bloom with car
man red blossoms
D u rin g the sum m er months.
Calluna vulgaris varities “ H E
Beale.” “ Mrs P at," and "Country
Wicklow" come into bloom At the
same time, the Calluna Vulgaris
v a r ie t ie s
“ G o ld le a f "
and
"Aureafolia" will be exhibiting the
colorful foliage that makes these
plants so popular
For the rock gardens and intimate
gardens where you can enjoy the in
dividual blooms, plant Daboecia can
tábrica. the Irish heath, that gives
pink to deep red. urn-shaped flowers
in clusters over the plant
Heather sometimes gets a bad
name because when left to its own
devices, it becomes rangy, open in
the center and has fewer and fewer
blooms.
The way to avoid this and keep the
heather vigorous and healthy is to
prune the plants severely right after
they finish blooming With a pruning
shear or hedge clipper, prune the old
blossoms off. cutting the branches
just below the bloom clusters This
gives the plants the haircut" they
need to stimulate new shoots and
more blossoms for the next year
