Hosts soothe skiers’
tempers with smile
I.inda Cockram
Skiing can be a frustrating ex
perience for both beginnner and
advanced skier alike.
The frustration may begin for
some skiers before they even get
to the slopes, just fighting the tra f
fic. Other skiers may loose their
temper tryin g to haul their skis
and poles from the car to the lodge
while wearing those s tiff ski boots
F o r what ever reason that
might have made the trip to the
mountain less than enjoyable, the
Ski Host is waiting at the lodge to
help make the day on the slopes an
enjoyable one
Bob Tourtillot, Ski Host coor
dinator at Tim berline tries to
focus on the families, and get
them off to a good start in the mor
ning
"One thing I try to do in the
morning, when the parents are
getting the whole fam ily together
and everybody is starting to get a
little bit testy after dragging their
equipment up here (from the
parking lot to the lodge), is help
mom' get into her skis while ‘dad’
is helping the kids into their skis,
and let everybody know that there
are Ski Hosts all over the h ill to
help the fam ily have a good time
and kind of jolly things up ”
The Ski Hosts at Timberline
focus in on what they call “ high
density areas," explained Linda
Cockram, also a Ski Host coor
dinator.
"These are areas such as — in
front of the lodge, the top of Pucci
ia highly used ski lift), or on
crowded slopes," said Cockram
In addition to the Ski Hosts con
cern with "high density areas,”
they also try to be in a position of
"high v is ib ility ."
"O ur goal is to have everybody
that skis here in a day encounter a
Host at least tw ice."
The bottom line is that the ski
hosts want the skiers to know that
the area is doing something to
help the skiers enjoy themselves
"We don't want to just take the
skiers money and ru n ," said B ill
Conerly, public relations coor
dinator at Tim berline
"W e’re saying, we are here to
serve the skier and how can we
serve them bette r," added Coner
ly
On m ost days yo u ’ll fin g
Cockram skiing along, helping
with any one of the three ski
schools that teach at Timberline,
helping the instructors pick-up the
kids after they’ve fallen
" I like to wait for the little kids
to fall, they're so cute, and fun to
work w ith ," said Cockram
For Tourtillot, the real satisfac
tion comes with helping skiers
progress with their skiing
I like to talk to people about
their skiing, and try to help them
progress I ’m not an instructor,
but what I ’ll do is try to take peo
ple on new slopes that w ill help
their skiing
While Tourtillot and Cockram
both boast over 15 seasons of ski
ing, Conerly stresses the need for
them not to show-off their skills,
adding that intim idating a skier in
need of assistance can be a
obstacle.
“ We don’t want to intimidate a
skier by skiing up to them and giv
ing them a nice hockey stop and
saying: Hey, let me help you.'
Most skiers w ill say ‘no-way ’
They don't want somebody tha4
can ski to watch them floundering
around in the snow,” explained
Conerly.
Meanwhile. Conerly, a Ski Host
for the past five years, noted that
it's necessary for a Ski Host to be
a strong intermediate skier
"W e’re not in the business of
looking good and skiing fast,
however, we can't afford to teach
our Hosts to ski,” said Conerly
In the future, the veteran Ski
Host hopes to set-up selecting
criteria for next seasons re cru it
ment of volunteer Ski Hosts
The choosen few who get to
wear the distinctive blue jackets
donated by White Stag w ill be en
titled to several benefits, accor
ding to Conerly.
"Ski Hosts receive a day-night
ticket to be used before, and after
their half-a-day duty I think the
half-a-day duty works nicely, it
allows are host to get some free
time in on the slopes," said Coner
ly
Conerly added that Ski Host
receive a free ticket after working
three days.
For volunteer Ski Host, David
Gillespie, a business m ajor at
Portland State Univ., the benefit
is more than just the free ticket
"Because I work and go to
school. Ski Hosting gives me the
chance to get up to mountain and
ski on the weekends. It also gives
the opportunity to meet the people
who work up here and ski here,”
said Gillespie
