submitted to the monthly

“ L ife In These United
States.” recounting the in
cident
” 1 sent it in about a year
ago.” she said, "and they
notified me in August that
it was going to be in.”
The anecdote appears in
the November issue:
"W hile waiting in line at
a savings-and-loan bank, I
overheard a young man as
he was applying for a
checking account He had
been patiently responding
to question after question,
but when the teller asked
for his mother’s maiden
name he seemed bemused
"F in ally he answered the
question, then added with
mock sincerity, And my
dog’s name is Dusty.’”
A longtime reader of the
monthly feature magazine,

"As the weather begins
to deteriorate, we re going
to have a corresponding in

residents to check their
chimney and, if warranted,
schedule a m echanical
cleaning
Dry, well-seasoned wood
should be burned, he said
“ Every day, religiously,
burn the fire hot and open
the drafts wide open That
burns out the creosote
buildup on a daily basis ”
G a lla g h e r

periodic checks of the
chimney by tapping the
stove A "tinkling sound”
could mean the beginning
of creosote buildup and an
increase in the chances for
a chimney fire
