PUBLIC NOTICE OF FILING OF OREGON
ELECTRIC RATE INCREASE APPLICATION
As a result of a substantial increase in the cost
of power from the Bonneville Power Administration
(BPA) effective October 1, Portland General Electric
Company estimates the cost of providing service to
its customers will go up an average of 1.7 percent, or
about $112 million a year PGE has therefore asked
the Oregon Public Utility Commissioner for an over
all rale increase of 1 7 percent This would cover the
costs of the BPA increase, dollar for dollar The PGE
request was filed with the PUC on September 24 If
approved, the PGE increase will go into effect with
meters read on and after October 28
Rates charged PGE by the BPA have increased
an average ot 60 percent This covers firm and
surplus power purchases and services such as
transmitting electricity and helping meet peak cus
tomer demand
The regional power act allows PGE to buy from
BPA 70 percent of the electricity used by its residen
tial and farm customers PGE buys the electricity at
BPAs wholesale rate and sells to BPA at PGE s
average cost of producing power The savings are
credited to customers bids Because BPA s whole
sale rate increased substantially, the savings to
PGE s customers are now less Under PGE s re
quest to the PUC residential rates would increase
