Quick action averts ‘life safety situation’

A pool house fire, two
special rescues, five auto
accidents, a motorcycle
wreck, 28 first aids and a
brush fire occupied the
time of firefighters at the
H o o d lan d R u ra l E ir e
D e p a rtm e n t the past
month.
At 3:15 p m on Friday,
Aug 20, firefighters ‘‘in­
itial attacked" a brush fire
on U S Forest Service pro­
tected land, 500 feet east of
Zigzag Village, just off Lolo
Pass Road
Also responding to the
fire were crews from
Oregon State Forestry' and
the Forest Service
On Thursday, Aug 19.
the report of a vehicle over
a cliff near Alder Creek,
between Mile post 32 and
33, was not as it seemed
The mishap involved no
passengers. As it turned
out. a 1982 Datsun. while in
the process of being towed,
was released prematurely
and plunged over a cliff
On Aug 8 the department
responded to two auto ac­
cidents and a motorcycle
accident
At 12:01 p.m. a male and
female overturned while
riding a motorcycle on
T im b e rlin e Road
The
male suffered a possible
back injury and a possible
shoulder fra c tu re . The
female sustained possible
neck injuries. Both were
transported to Gresham
Community Hospital by
Alpine Ambiance
Later that same day, fire
d e p a rtm e n t p ers o n n el
assisted at two non injury
motor vehicle accidents
The first occurred at the
junction of Lolo Pass Road
and the Barlow Trail Road,
and the second on Highway
26 near Alder Creek
On Aug. 7 a rescue team
fro m the d e p a rtm e n t
assisted a 16-year-old male
who fell from a cliff in the
Salm on R iv e r Canyon
while on an outing with a
Baptist church group

responded at 4:35 p m to
the report of the injured
hiker, who was three miles
up the Salmon River, just
south of Zig Zag
Upon arriva l rescuers
discovered Ricky Gaupso
of Portland, who was suf­
fering from head injuries
and a fractured right leg.
According to Fire Chief
Don Armintrout, it took
five hours to carry Gaupso
out to Salmon River Road
on a Stokes Basket.
An early-morning fire
Aug 1 totally destroyed a

house at the Zigzag village
subdivision on Lolo Pass
Road, near the town of Zig
Zag.

the alarm at 8:10 a m after
receiving a call from the
caretaker. Lucy Bowman,
who discovered the fire
Bowman removed two
25 pound sacks of chlorine
that was stored in the shed
prior to the arrival of the
fire department Her ac­
tions, said A rm introu t,
averted potential problems
the firefighters could have
had with the chlorine
Armintrout said if the
chlorine had caught fire it
would of created a “ nox­
ious’’ gas, which could
have made it necessary to
e v a c u ia te th e e n tir e
p o p u la tio n of Z ig z a g
Village. He said the inci­
dent would have turned
very quickly “ to a life safe­
ty situation ’*
When firefighters first
arrived at the scene they
discovered a 350-square-
foot building, which was
being used as a pool house,
totally involved.
A total of 13 firefighters,
two engines, a tanker and a
rescue rig were called to
the blaze They were able
to get the fire under control
by 9:30 a m. But despite
their efforts, the building
was a total loss.

the fire caused 98,000
damage to the building and
93,000 damage to its con­
tents. The Zigzag Village
Homeowners Association
owns the building.
The fire was started by a
pool heater pipe that was
located too close to con
bustive material, said Ar

On Sunday, July 31, a
1 3 -y e a r-o ld
boy
was
rescued from the Sandy
River
Armintrout said at 2:50
p m his department per­
formed a river rescue near
the end of Salmon Street in
Brightwood He said Jeff
Gross of Sandy attempted
to wade the river and
became trapped on some
rocks in the middle of the
rapids.
At 3:50 p.m. a two-car in­
jury accident occurred east
of the town of Zig Zag, at
the junction of Highway 26
and Faubian Road. The
responding fire d ep art­
ment personnel, Alpine

C o u n ty
sheriff’s deputy reportedly
had some problems com­
municating with the per­
sons involved in the acci­
dent
One of the vehicles con­
tained three Vietnamese
and, the other, two M ex­
icans None could speak
English
The accident resulted in
the three Vietnamese being
transported to Portland
Adventist Medical Center
by Alpine Ambiance for
lacerations, neck injuries
and a possible fractured
leg.
