SANDY, OREGON THURSDAY, JULY 8, 1982
Local economy has its bright spots
A handful of local business
failures, not unique these reces
sionary days, hardly provides
cause fo r a la rm . Because
business persons become closer
friends in a small town where
folks known in business double as
neighbors, the casualties appear
more drastic.
The economy, however, runs in
cycles, as do salmon and smelt
Slow runs are followed by good
runs In Sandy’s case, though, this
slow run is showing some bright
new fish m igrating upstream
against the current.
While Heritage Square is losing
its m ajor tenant, there’s new hope
a new department store may take
its place While wood stove, televi
sion, and clothing stores are li
quidating, new stores recently
have opened to take their places
A waterbed store new in Sandy
this year already has expanded
with a second store in Portland,
while a new Sandy bank is grow
ing this year with a merger.
New owners of Sandy’s travel
agency recently expanded with a
second shop in Estacada.
One builder, Mike Nicholson,
reportedly has enough confidence
in Sandy’s future economy to
begin construction of a house here
with no pre sold buyer.
Joel Shekter of Sandy Shoe
Repair celebrates his fourth an
niversary in business here with
sim ilar optimism captured in his
sign: “ We still believe in Sandy.’ ’
Things aren’t even that bleak
for Heritage Square, where Earl
Spinks continues his year-old gun
store business here, with other
tenants upstairs and next door.
Examine the blessings of the
past economic year here: A
children ’s clothing store has open
ed in the Frontier Building, with
another boutique and beauty
salon upstairs. Nearby a big, new-
video arcade has opened to give
local youth something to do in
town.

QUESTION
What are you doing to teach
ntudenta to w rite7
ANSWER
Every student at Sandy High
Srhonol must complete four years of
English The first year is partially devoted
to a serious study of English grammar
The second year is fully composition
where the student practices writing using
the rules of language he learned as a
freshman In addition, each student who
fails Io score high enough In language on
the California Achievement Test given
during the junior year is required to take
enriched English as s senior This course
is a writing course with emphasis on
mechanics and usage Three of .Handy

minimum goals foe graduation' are in the
area of writing and spelling No student
can graduate from Sandy High unless he
meets these very basic standards
QUESTION
Why does Sandy use so
much water in sprinkling its grounds7
ANSWER
Ninety percent at the water
used in maintaining the fields and grounds
which comprise the Handy High campus
originate« from Handy High s own self
contained water source (its wells and its
pond> Watering of the fields and grounds
takas place on a minimum rotating
schedule which allows for sprinkling of an
area every five days during Mistering hot
weather At other times watering io done
to simply rep the fields from drying up and
becoming (histy It should be noted that all
playing fields are used as teaching stations
for our physical education program and
must be maintained to meet Oregon sten
danls for this program Much of the water
used at the fields focing Rannow Stadium
is recycled and flows hark to the holding
pond located in that area. City water to
sprinkle campus grounds is used inf re
quently and only during exceedingly hot
weather

Just when the tension began to
climax, the good old ‘ Congres

with some munitions for the bat
tle against stress last week
This talk of stress is no prattle
Like most everyone else, the in

not being in shape I worried
about worrying too much.
It got to the point I had to admit
that, yes, those are gray hairs
cropping up throughout my scalp
like mushrooms in a cow field
after a ram, not specks of paint
from refinishing the kitchen ceil
ing
Just when I went around the
comer and saw the breaking
point on the horizon, “The Con
gresatonal Record ' came to the
rescue
It seems that a lot of U S

senators and representatives
evidently have days full of stress
Sparing the populace the added
coat of throwing elections to
replace dying legislators, the dai
ly report of legislative activities
provided its readers with some
hints for unwinding
I ’ve started incorporating
some of the suggestions into my
daily routine and already I've
noted a change 1 don't worry
about what Chuck and Di are go
ing to name their little prince
anymore
2 “Take catnaps if possible
Lie down in your office and listen
to the sound of your breath This
helps blank everything out of
your mind ’’
That certainly sounds like
some worthwhile advice I ’ve
always felt a blank mind is a
healthy mind In the case of a few
representatives. I'm curious if
their minds can get any blanker
I find my catnaps are also more
fruitful if I work on them just
after completing the first sugges
tion so I can draw from the added
weariness created by the longer
walk to drift into dreamland
So far no one in the office has
commented Probably because ‘.t
keeps me from spending my
working hours lecturing on the
importance of supporting the
Boston Red Sox.
3. “Carry a heavy attache case,
overloaded, when you go home,
even if you don't open it, to get
the exercise of carrying weight ’
That's ridiculous I suppose a
lot of people with stress probably
enjoy eliminating tensions at the
end of the day the way I do, with a
cold beer or two
If one keeps this program up
for any extended time at all. they
already know about carrying a
little extra weight
4 “Tail j a seventh inning
stretch fiv< or six times a day and
certainly between meetings ’’
That works out pretty well, but
customers tend to eye you a touch
warily after about the fourth time
they come in and you’re singing
“Take Me Out to the Ball Game ”
I know “The Congressional
Record" was trying to be helpful,
but since reading their hints, I've
found that if you follow the
philosophy of baseball player
Mickey Rivers, you won't have to
worry about stress
As Rivers explains it, “ Ain't no
sense in worrying about things
you got control over, 'cause it you
got control over them, ain’t no
sense worrying And there ain't
no sense worrying about things
you got no control over, 'cause if
you got no contrM over them,
ain't no sense worrying "
