Gallery owner seeks ‘quality’ art
Three years later, after
the longing for the things
she grew up with became
too intense. Smith returned
to Oregon hoping to find a
job in the advertising in
dustry.
What she said she missed
the most was the changing
seasons. Los Angeles just
seemed to have one con
tinuous season
“ I was in LA until the
moss o my back started to
dry and the web between
my toes started to recede
and I didn't feel like an
Oregonian anymore." said
Smith "1 had to return
home."
When she returned to
O regon, h ow ever, her
H o llyw o o d c re d e n tia ls
created little demand for
her work in advertising So.
she began first as a recep
tionist and then quickly
worked herself into a job as
a copywriter
She later opened her own
advertising agency and
operated it for a number of
years Then she quit the
fast paced life to live in the
country and paint
"1 loved the advertising
field for years and then, all
of a sudden, I didn’t want to
do it a n y m o re ," said
Smith " I got tired of all
those deadlines "
After a few years of con
centrating on her a rt.
Smith decided she'd begin
her third career—as the
owner of an art gallery
Searching For A Site
Finding a suitable place
was not an easy chore, said
Smith She investigated not
only available sites with
local real estate offices but
also reviewed seasonal
traffic volume reports by
the state Highway Depart
ment. as well as analyzing
projected tourist figures
and housing starts with
Clackamas County.
" A f t e r in v e s tig a tin g
thoroughly I determined
that putting a gallery on
the mountain was extreme
ly economically feasible,"
said Smith
' The projected growth
figures for the M Hood
area over the next five to 20
years is excellent," said
Smith, "and the growth of
the tourist industry is also
good "

The Glacier Gallery will
offer the works of 30 a r
tists, said Smith, some who
are known both nationally
and internationally
Joel C o ttet, a L ake
O sw ego a r t is t whose
ceramic pieces can weigh
over 1000 pounds, will have
a large sampling of his
work displayed All are
hand sculptored.
Smith said that some of
Cottet’s chairs weigh as
much as 250 pounds but are
easy to move around the
house or patio since they
are equipped with rollers.
Cottet, who is the only
known potter that creates
such large pieces of art,
designed and engineered
the 10-cubic-foot kiln in his
garage
Using that kiln he has
produced table and chair
sets, giant planters. light
towers, bar stools, and
even a 250-pound "Star
Wars” chair, which swivels
and has built-in armrests
Outside the gallery Cot
tet’s seven-foot high, six-
foot wide fountain, com
plete with lights and flow
ing w ater, accents the
shop's western wall
The fountain weighs an
estimated t(XW pounds and
has a onion domed top
C o ttet, who re ce n tly
assisted in the moving of
some of his original works
into the gallery, said that
all his ceramic pieces are
guaranteed against the
elements of nature He said
that his table and chair sets
has survived both the
severe ice, snow and
30-below zero weather of
Alaska, as well as the
tropical heat and blowing
sands of Hawaii.
