Daugherty second for Pioneers at AAA state track meet
by SCOTT NEWTON
Last year Paige Daugherty was
disappointed with her finishes
(javelin and shot put) at the AAA
state meet
Last weekend the SUHS junior
made up for it, throwing 40-3 and a
half for a second-place finish
" I ’m happy I made the points but
a wanted a PR,” Daugherty said
“ I would have felt better about my
place if.I would have PRed ”
Her personal record is a 40-6.
Karen Hancock of Tigard won the
event with a throw of 43-11 and a
half
Daugherty was pleased to have
been relaxed. ” 1 was happy,” she
said " I wasn't uptight or anything
and I felt like I competed okay.”
She was fifth going into the
finals, but moved into second with
her next-to-last throw, edging out
Barb Keller of Glencoe, who threw
40-2 and a half
Daugherty improved three feet
as a freshman, five feet as a
sophomore, and three feet again as
a junior. "So, I'm looking forward
to five next year,” she joked
A goal is Michele Cleland’s
school shot record of 43 1. Despite
the fact that Cleland is a friend,
she said the record’s “ got to go.”
Daugherty said she’ll be spen
ding a lot of her time this summer
g e ttin g ready fo r v o lle y b a ll
season, although she w ill throw
some during the off season.
A member of the Pioneers jazz
group and symphonic choir as well
as the National Honor Society,
Daugherty hopes to earn a music
scholarship if a scholarship in
athletics is unavailable.
She wiH work as a waitress at
Red Lion this summer, and w ill
play a part in her second opera.
The first part was a small one, but
this time she has a lead in "Hansel
and Gretel,” to be produced by the
East Portland Metropolitan Opera
Company.
" I t ’s a part for two sopranos,”
she said. “ I ’m going to play
Hansel. Don’t laugh ”
Senior Stephanie Hagstrom
earned a medal with a fifth-place
finish in the javelin, and she also
set a personal record in the discus,
throwing 115-8.
Senior Steve Metelak, whose last
three meets highlighted the season
for Coach Randy Hutchinson,
finished fifth in the 900
"He ran a real smart race," Hut
chinson said. "The pack kind of
played into his hands in terms of
what I thought he was capable of.”
The long relay, comprised of
sophomores Polly Kelley, Lisa
Hassett and Sharon Jensen and
senior Gayle Roth, set a PR in the
preliminaries, running a 4:00.0.
They ran, cumulatively, four
seconds slower Saturday, which
turned out to be the difference bet
ween sixth and second
"The important thing is we had
kids make it to the finals,” Hut
chinson said, pointing out that that
puts them in the top eight in the
state.
About R oth, who fin is h e d
seventh in the 300 hurdles and
eighth in the 800, Hutchinson said,
"She did a super job. That’s a
tough triple in anybody’s book.
There aren’t a whole lot of people
who can do that.”
Like Roth in the 800, junior Scott
Skipper did not do as well In the
javelin as expected,
He also empeted in three events.
He’ll have another opportunity to
compete this weekend as he was in
vited to the Prefontaine Classic in
Eugene
He s till has the fourth-best
javelin throw in the state this
season.
Sophomore Sam Romey ran well
enough to qualify for the finals in
the 1500, and Kelley ran two 400s
under a minute Friday.
Sophomore Denise Proctor was
10th in the shot, and Jensen ran a
60.7 leg in the long relay, a per
sonal record.
Hutchinson would like to see
senior Chris Crabtree pole vaulting
next year. " I think he’s missing the
boat if he doesn’t go to a junior col
lege and continue vaulting. I think
he has a lot of a b ility,” Hutchinson
said. * '
Senior Richard Doering said all
week he was going to set a personal
record in the javelin, and he did
“ That impressed me,” Hutchinson
said.
“ I don’t think we’ve ever taken
as good a group of kids anywhere,”
H utchinson concluded. "T h e y
represented the school well.”
