Girls down Molalla in bottom of ninth
Without the errors, the Sandy

softball coach.
The girls went into the bottom of
the ninth down 6 8 .
Anne Sarich singled to get the inn
ing off to a good start.
Mo Beckett got on base on an error,
and Jill Dahlager hit a sacrifice fly to
right field, which scored Sarich
Doreen Turin then singled, scoring
Beckett, and ended up stealing home
on a passed ball for the tying score.
Dawn New hit the ball to the short
stop and was thrown out at first for
the second out
Tammy Edwards drew a walk, and
then stole second.
At .son Carpenter hit a one hopper
to the shortstop "The shortstop
th.ew one of the best rise balls I ’ve
ever seen." Curtis said " It went
right over the first baseman's head.
‘ She had been hitting her in the
cheat real well, but this one just
climbed right over.”
That error allowed Edwards to
score the winning run.
Curtis said he was pleased that
they didn't give up at the plate
Turin, a senior, was credited with do
ing an especially good job
"She came through with the bat
when we needed her too,” Curtis
said
She went in as a substitute, and
was two-for two at the plate.
The Pioneers had 10 runs on seven
hits with eight errors and six players
left on base
Molalla had nine runs on four hits
with seven errors and eight left on
base
Patty Gray was once again com
plimented for a fine game She faced
36 batters, striking out six and allow
ing four hits and four walks Only one
of those nine runs was earned.

Last week the girls won 14-1 over
Estacada and lost a key T V L m at
chup with Canby, 15-0.
The Pioneers are 5 2, with Canby
and Oregon City tied for first in the
league race.
The Pioneers finished off Estacada
in five innings, scoring 14 runs on 10
hits with two errors and leaving five
on base.
Gray threw a no hitter. Estacada
made five errors and left three on
base
Sarich and Hc-ckard each had two
singles, Dahlager had one. New had a
single and a double, and Carpenter
had three singles
"So, Allison’s bat is starting to
talk,” Curtis said.
One of the more outstanding plays
against Estacada was made by
Bonita Connelly, according to Curtis.
She caught a pop fly, but the ball
dropped out of her mitt. Still, she
managed to grab it with her hand
before it hit the ground
About the Canby game, Curtis said,

" I just hope we got the bad game out

Canby's Diane Baker faced 20 bat
ters in five innings, fanning five
while allowir » four hits. She didn’t
walk any _andy players.
" I would have to consider her the
best pitcher in the league,” Curtis
said.
While the Canby defense made only
one error, Sandy committed eight.

The girls take on Estacada at home
(Kelso School field) Friday at 4 p.m.
Girl thinclads keep record unblemished
The Sandy girls avenged a loss
fro m la s t y e a r and re m a in
undefeated with an 89 38 win over
Oregon City in track action last
week.
The girls are now 4-0 in dual meet
competition.
The boys lost 94-49 Thursday. ‘‘All
in all, we had an excellent meet,”
Coach Randy Hutchinson said “ We
competed well ”
The Pioneers have been training
through meets, hoping to get peak
performances at the district meet.
Despite that fact that many of the
team members were tired physcial-
ly, the good weather tended to bring
out the best.

Shelby Dries set a personal record
in the high jump. She finished second
with a 61 jump
Polly Kelly set a personal record in
the 800, finishing second in 2:29 7. She
won the 400 with a time of 1:01.6.
The girls 400 and 1600-meter relay
teams won. Both groups were
credited with having run well.
The 400 was comprised of Gayle
Roth, Sharon Jensen, Calkins and
Lindsay. On the 1600 was Lisa
Hassett, Kelly, Jensen and Roth.

weekend
He won $5 for finishing fourth in the
St. Paul-Champoeg Two-Stage bicy
cle race Saturday.
He finished fourth in a 2.7 mile time
trial, covering the course in 6:17. He
finished sixth in a 49-mile race (he
didn’t receive a tim e), for a fourth-
place finish overall.
He said receiving a cash award
would not affect his amateur status.

Laura Stringham turned in a
season's best in the 1500, finishing
third in 5:08 6.
Stephanie Hagstrom turned in a
season's best in the javelin, finishing
first with a toss of 142-3. “T hat’s a
heck f a throw,” Hutchinson said, ad
ding that it’ll put her among the
state’s best.

West Linn, Oregon City, Molalla.
Silverton and Estacada during the
week
Alice Schoppert and Tracy Toole,
the number two doubles team, won
6- 1, 6-3 last week, winning the only
match as the team fell 6-1 to West

two tie breakers to fall 7-6, 7 6 as San

“ I felt we did well even though we

" It was really a good match,”
Rossos said. "She played excellent.”

time she played the EstAcada oppo
nent.

1971-72 victorious;
Blazers edge all-stars
The 1972-72 basketball team, win
ners of the 1982 Alumni Basketball
Tournament, beat Central Catholic’s
alumni champions 83-79 Friday.
Rick Zimmerman iced the game
for Sandy with a slam-dunk in the
closing seconds of play.
Sandy was down 38-30 at halftime,
and had a 5656 lead after three
quarters.

finish. He ran a 23.5.
Ryan Coombs set a season's best in
the 100, finishing third in 11.7.
Tim Pullen didn’t place in the high
hurdles with his PR of 17.7, a two-
second drop, but Hutchinson was
pleased "T h a t’s a heck of a job.”
Zimmerman scored 28 points. Ray
Perkins contributed 24, Dean Dickin
son, 11, Pat Sutton, 12, and Randy
Akers, seven.
Although the Sandy alumni all
stars were down 68-49 at halftime
against the Blazer Oldtimers, the se
cond game played Friday night, an
inside shot by Alan Nippert with 1:50
left to play got Sandy within two, at
101-103.
After two key rebounds by Zim
merman, each of which were follow
ed by Sandy turnovers, the Blazers
ended up with the ball and 1:17 left on
the clock
They held the ball until 35 seconds
remained, and then Sandy started
fouling, with the Blazers Geoff Petrie
connecting on three of four foul shots.

T routdale Lions Club to
sponsor ‘T rot’ Saturday
The Troutdale Lions Club will hold
its fifth annual Troutdale Trot on
May 1, starting at 9 30 a m at the
Troutdale City Park.
The 6 7-mile race is expected to
draw its largest field yet. Rased on
the return of pre registration forms,
600 will participate Entrants can
sign up on race day, beginning at 8
a m,, in the city park building
The $6 entry fee includes a t-shirt
for all entrants In addition there will
be trophies and ribbons for the
various winners.
A $25 gift certificate will be award
ed to the winners of each of 16 dif
ferent age groups
The proceeds of the race will go to
the Troutdale Lions Club scholarship
fund, as well as other club charities

play begins
Saturday
Sandy Area Softball Association
league play will get underway this
weekend, with all 12 mens teams
playing Saturday.
The first game will start at 9 a m .,
with the last one beginning at 4:30
p.m. All will be played at Cedar
Ridge School.
This will be the first year Sandy
participates as an American Softball
Association-sanctioned league

for boys

The Sandy boys tennis team drop
ped duals with West Linn, Oregon Ci
ty, Sweet Home, Silverton and
Estacada during the week.
West Linn and Oregon City blanked
the Pioneers last week.
Against Sweet Home, a 61 losa,
Tom Elliot and David Bender, the
number three doubles team, won 6-3,
7-5.
Against Silverton Monday Elliot
and Render won 62, 6 2 , and the
number one doubles team, compris
ed of Pat Spnggel and Scott Bender,
won 6-4, 63.
David Bender and Elliot were mov
ed up to the second doubles position
for the Estacada dual Tuesday, and
won 64, 7-5.

the number three doubles team, also
