Softball team chases TVL title
After a good week, the Sandy soft
ball team is in the thick of the TVL t i
tle chase
The girls are 3-1, tied for first with
Canby and Oregon City
Tuesday night it was the out
fielders who got a workout as Sweet

long bus trip must have paid off as
the Pioneers caught those fly balls.

we settled down and played some

inning with nobody out and the bases

Monday the Pioneers fell to Oregon
City 6-5 in eight innings. Oregon City
tied it up in the seventh, winning it in
the extra inning
Sandy was ahead 5-2 going into the
seventh and "kicked it away.”
"1 feel we should have won," Heath
said “ There are no excuses to be
made They’ve got a good team and
you can’t let ’em up."
Heath said that Contreras, their
catcher, has been doing an especially
good job He’s been playing despite
suffering from the flu.
He'll play at David Douglas on
June 11 and at Churchill High School

and Columbia 20. The Sandy boys
ended up with 72, with Lebanon winn
ing again, this time with 92 points
Columbia ended the day with 48
points
The boys 1600-meter relay set a
personal record Saturday with a
second-place finish Steve Brader,
Steve Metelak, Tyson Cummings and
Russell Fork comprise that team.
They ran a 3:32.9.
Stephanie Hagstrom set a personal
record in the discus Saturday with a
toss of 111-8, which earned her first-
place honors
Caryn Fuller set a personal record
with her 54.6 time in the 300-metei in
termediate hurdles. She finished
fifth.
Donna Nelson turned in a season
best in the 3000, winning it with a
time of 11:07 4.
Good times were also turned in by
Polly Kelly in the 400 (first, 1:00.9)
and by the 1600-meter relay team
(first, 4.09.9).
The relay team is comprised of
Gayle Roth, Lisa Hassett, Sharon
Jensen and Kelly.
Coach Randy Hutchinson said that
Kelly has been doing a good job for
them.
The Pioneers w ill be in action to
day at 4 p.m. in a home dual against
Oregon City.

3rd time no charm,
’71-72 again takes title
The third time wasn’t a charm for
the class of 1977.
Three times they have met the
classes of 1971-72 in the finals of the
Sandy Alumni Basketball Tourna
ment. They lost for the third con
secutive time Saturday night, 71-70.
This, however, was the closest
game, with '71-72 winning on a short
jumper by Rick Zimmerman with
two seconds left on the clock

About 30 competed in the 15- to
17-year-olds division
The game was close most of the
way, with ’71-72 gaining a nine-point
halftime lead. By the end of the third
quarter the class of 1977 had a one
point lead, 52-51.
It appeared that ’77 was on its way
to a championship, with a five-point
lead and two minutes to play.
They began to hold the ball a little,
but Steve Buhler intercepted a pass
and made an uncontested layup
The class of ’71-72 scored again
after a missed foul shot by ’77’s Ran
dy Keller.
Scott Cravens then missed the
front end of a one-and-one for ’77,
with ’71-71 getting the rebound.
